You have to develop youngsters to get NHL'ers

We have promising youngsters and I think our youth development has always been good. Considering we are a very small nation and the material from where the players come is no where as broad as lets say Canada, Russia...so taking that into consideration, we have good system. Always room for improvement though, cuz we do need success in the youth championships etc.

Finland's Bronze medal hockey team was old though. Guys like Bakstrom and Ruutu are getting up there. Lots of 32 years and up guys.

Doesn't seem like the same caliber as 10 years ago are still coming out of several European countries. I'm not sure if the programs or the interest is in decline :-k

That being said, the NHL has more non-Canadians than ever.

Chara is a giant bastard  They had to extend the league's maximum stick length for him, so him having the hardest shot makes sense

I'd be terrified to have to dive in front of a one-timer from him on a PK. Fuuuuuuuuck that

I'm pumped Daniel Sedin got accuracy!! It's easy to recognize he has a great shot, but the twins are best known for brilliant hockey before their outright skill. Pretty awesome

If anything the draft made things even more awkward than usual

Kessel being picked last was hilarious but the looks on everyone's faces was so uncomfortable. Especially when they gave him a new car for it. Toews was clearly pissed at Kane. Daniel and Hank had nothing of interest to say about being split up... Should I go on?!?

Most hockey players are pretty serious... you don't want to stick a camera in Ryan Kesler's face for very long. He's just not that charismatic. They're mostly farm/small town boys. Having an entire weekend surrounding them pretending they don't hate one another, and then playing a game without hitting or point shots just isn't as much fun as it looks on paper.

Teh One Who Knocks
01-31-2011, 05:27 PM
Just scrap the all-star game and stick with the skills competition

Godfather
01-31-2011, 05:29 PM
Yeah I agree... I'm not sure there's a format for an All-Star game we would care about.

Unless they did it at the end of the season and they could afford to actually hit, and the defense can actually play the game. As it stands right now it's just a glorified game of street hockey.

Teh One Who Knocks
01-31-2011, 06:34 PM
I doubt changing it to the end of the year would matter. Look at the NFL Pro Bowl...they don't hit or play defense either and that game is at the end of the season :wha:

I disagree. Home-ice advantage in the Finals should be determined by which team was better for a long-ass 82 game season.

Baseball does that already, it's stupid. At least in baseball they can try hard and have a low risk of being hurt

If you get guys diving in front of Chara's slapshots for a stupid all-star game because they think it might determine something in the playoffs, someone is going to lose a key player for a dumb fan-pleaser game

March 22 1989...a little over 2 months before I was born ...sideline someone for the season...or their entire career.

Teh One Who Knocks
02-05-2011, 08:56 PM
Ah, thanks for the date...found it:

On March 22, 1989, one of the most gruesome looking sports injuries ever to happen occured. In an NHL game between the St. Louis Blues and Buffalo Sabres, two players collided at the front of the net, and one player's skate catches Sabres goalie Clint Malarchuk on the neck, slicing open his jugular vein.

Blood started pouring from his neck onto the ice--yet amazingly, Malarchuk left the ice under his own power with the assistance of the team's trainer. Seven people in the stands fainted, two had heart attacks, and some of his own teammates threw up on the ice.

"All I wanted to do was get off the ice," says Malarchuk. "My mother was watching the game on TV, and I didn't want her to see me die."

Fortunately for Malarchuk, the team's trainer, Jim Pizzutelli, was a former Army medic who served in Vietnam. Pizzutelli reached into Malarchuk's neck and pinched off the bleeding, not letting go until doctors arrived and started closing the wound. Malarchuck had been minutes from becoming the second on-ice fatality in NHL history.

It was estimated that if the skate hit 1/8 inch higher on Malarchuk's jugular, he would have been dead within two minutes. In the dressing room and on his way to the hospital, doctors spent 90 minutes and used over 300 stitches to close the wound.

Amazingly enough, he came back from the injury. In the same season. While reports that he came back in just a few days may be overstated, he did come back that same season, and played in the NHL for several more seasons after the incident.

And now all goalies in the NHL are required to wear some form of neck protection.

...The Canucks game on the other hand was disappointing. We just didn't get the bounces. Lots of missed opportunities. Another defensive injury to Dan Hamhuis, one of our best D-men :wha: He got crunched in a blind-side hit where Getzlaf left his feet (though he tried to say he didn't post-game). No penalty for either infraction on the hit. Hamhuis looked really confused and lay on the ice quite a while. I imagine he'll be out now with a concussion a few games.

Every team needs to deal with injury... but having 4 of our top D-men, each good for 15-20 minutes, out right now is sketchy. Salo, Edler, Hamhuis and Ballard, plus a top defensive prospect Sweatt!?!?

We've already had 32 players dress for us this season... it's going to be interesting to see who fills the gaps on our bench this next few weeks.

The Canucks club all gives back in a big way. The players sponsor and fund raise for "Canuck House" which is a place that very sick children and their families can go and have everything they want and need. Pretty amazing. All the players and their wives give a lot of time to that and go visit children in the hospital on a regular basis. In addition to the suspensions, Gillies will lose $24,193.53 in salary; Martin will forfeit $41,585.36 (repeat offender); and Godard $40,322.25. The Islanders organization has also been fined $100,000...

Lemieux bashes NHL for brawl aftermath
By IRA PODELL, AP Hockey Writer

NEW YORK (AP)—Pittsburgh Penguins owner Mario Lemieux said the NHL failed in its punishment of the New York Islanders following a fight-filled game between the teams—and went so far as to question whether he wanted to stay in the league.

Lemieux, who had a Hockey Hall of Fame playing career with the Penguins, issued a statement Sunday in which he bashed the league’s handling of the aftermath of Friday night’s 9-3 Islanders victory in which there were 346 penalty minutes, 10 ejections, 15 fighting majors and 20 misconducts.

“Hockey is a tough, physical game, and it always should be. But what happened Friday night on Long Island wasn’t hockey. It was a travesty,” Lemieux said. “It was painful to watch the game I love turn into a sideshow like that.”

The NHL suspended New York forwards Trevor Gillies for nine games and Matt Martin for four and hit the team with a $100,000 fine late Saturday night, saying the Islanders “must bear some responsibility for their failure to control their players.”

Lemieux, who bought the team out of bankruptcy in 1999 and ended his playing career during the 2005-06 season, said the sanctions weren’t nearly enough.

“The NHL had a chance to send a clear and strong message that those kinds of actions are unacceptable and embarrassing to the sport. It failed,” he said. “We, as a league, must do a better job of protecting the integrity of the game and the safety of our players. We must make it clear that those kinds of actions will not be tolerated and will be met with meaningful disciplinary action.

“If the events relating to Friday night reflect the state of the league, I need to rethink whether I want to be a part of it.”

The NHL stood by the punishments handed out by league disciplinarian Colin Campbell.

“We are entirely comfortable with how Friday night’s events were handled,” NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said in a statement. “We have no other response to Mr. Lemieux’s statement.”

Pittsburgh forward Eric Godard was the only member of the Penguins’ organization to be punished by the NHL. He received an automatic 10-game suspension because he left the bench to join a fight between New York’s Micheal Haley and Penguins goalie Brent Johnson.

Pittsburgh also avoided a fine by the league. That drew the ire of Islanders general manager Garth Snow.

“When I saw the suspensions on both sides and the fines, I was a little bit surprised it was just our club that got fined,” Snow said Sunday before the Islanders played at Buffalo. “You can ask the league about it. There’s nothing we can do about it but put it behind us and get ready for Buffalo.”

Snow said he had no intention to appeal the league’s decision, but noted that no Islanders player left the bench to take part in a fight.

“I’m very proud that our team showed restraint,” Snow said. “We came to play hockey and obviously, there’s a lot of things that happen in the course of a game. I’m proud of the way our team competed, and I’m going to support my guys.”

Asked if the punishment was fair, Snow said Campbell had a tough job and he would never criticize him.

“I respect the process,” Snow said. “It was a professionally run process.”

Campbell held disciplinary hearings with three Islanders players Saturday at the team’s hotel in Buffalo. All but Zenon Konopka of that group received suspensions.

The two major brawls Friday night were sparked by Martin and Gillies.

The first broke out in the second period when Martin jumped Max Talbot from behind near center ice and started a fight, presumably in retaliation for an unpenalized hit delivered by Talbot on Feb. 2 against Islanders forward Blake Comeau, who hasn’t played since because of a concussion.

In that previous meeting, Johnson also knocked down counterpart Rick DiPietro with one punch to the face, leaving the Islanders goalie out for four to six weeks because of facial fractures.

During the third period Friday, Gillies charged after Penguins forward Eric Tangradi and hit him high with an elbow before landing several punches. From the tunnel leading to the Islanders dressing room, Gillies then taunted Tangradi once the Pittsburgh player got up on his skates. Tangradi was diagnosed with a concussion, and he sat out Sunday’s game against the New York Rangers.

Already dealing with a growing number of concussions, including one to Penguins captain Sidney Crosby that has kept him sidelined since early January, the NHL is taking serious measures to punish head contact.

“The actions by the Islanders’ Gillies and Martin were deliberate attempts to injure by delivering blows to the head of players who were unsuspecting and unable to defend themselves,” Campbell said in a statement announcing the suspensions.

“The message should be clear to all players: targeting the head of an opponent by whatever means will be dealt with by suspension.”

And? its not like that happens a lot lately ...first regulation loss for Luongo IN OVER 2 MONTHS!!...I know Lance would "almost" kill to have his team win that much games (lost 8 in a row...ouch)

Yeah it'd be cool to see them come back... I'm not sure anyone really wants to fork out the money for the new stadium at this point though.

And it'd have to be a guarantee from the league that it'd be worth it... but with Bettman the way he is, who knows if they'd ever get that regardless of what he said about the potential being there.

Look at all the teams that are struggling to get people in their arenas down south...he MIGHT wake up at some point ..Hockey is popular in Canada and north USA (with some exceptions south)

I'm not holding my breath... Phoenix has been struggling for years now and he won't sell to someone wanting to move the team. And that's just one struggling team, never mind the problem of the NHL being several teams too large. Think of how much fuggin' money he could have saved the league

What a twat.... it's not even worth talking about really. The guy just gets us fired up

Hey, we still lost to a 13th place team  Nobody likes that, regardless of how strong we've been since December

But I'm expecting a few more given our injuries and the fact that the streaks we've had just don't last forever.

Well if there is *1* thing that I'm to thankful Bettman...yes there is something ....The Hockey News reported 2 weeks ago that he stopped the Lecavalier trade...I should be pissed, right? well get this: names involved in that trade...Plekanec, Price and Subban!!!!:wtf:...He was trying to save Tampa's market I know...but he saved us from a few years of misery  (Plekanec has more PASSES than Lecavalier has POINTS!, Price has the 2nd most wins in the league and Subban is without a doubt one of our best guys on defense!

Would have been one of the worst trade in Habs history...trading our 3 best players this year for some underachieving Quebec player

..............Salo and Alberts are both hurt now. Alberts has a broken hand (6 weeks), Salo is out day to day. Why am I not surprised Salo only lasted two games? They say he might play the next one, but I doubt it.

So now the running list of hurt defensement one more time: Hamhuis, Ballard, Edler, Salo, Alberts, Sweatt

I don't remember one area of a team being this fucked up... ever  We honestly have two defensemen left to play for us who are full-time NHL material :wha: And I won't go into how much I hate Bieksa being one of them.

Why on earth should they get a team? :-s

The NHL needs contraction, not expansion.

I would do major contraction but with some relocations. All teams south of Ohio would be gone. All teams west of Minnesota with the exception of Colorado and maybe Dallas and San Jose would also be gone. Then put a team in Quebec, Winnipeg and Wisconsin.

Godfather
02-15-2011, 07:21 PM
Yeah exactly, relocation not expansion... Canada doesn't have enough teams and we have plenty enough fans with money wanting to be part of the game (all of our 6 teams sell out)

Quebec, southern Ontario are far more suited to support a team than Pheonix, Atlanta or Columbus :wha:

Cut a couple of the worst teams, move a few others... that's the solution to the NHL's attendance woes. Which everyone except Bettman can see

I don't think QC deserves a team....they had a pretty damn good team once before and the arena was 80% empty most of the time :wha:

I'd leave the Kings where they are now too

Godfather

Perhaps... but that was 16 years ago... The Canadian dollar was brutal, Quebec couldn't afford the rise in player salaries, english coverage of games was shotty.

They'd have to be a better market than Phoenix... maybe even the Avs  The rest of the Canadian teams have 100% attendance now, games are a public affair these days.

Teams for contraction/relocation: Phoenix, Florida, Tampa, Nashville, Anaheim, Atlanta, Carolina

That sounds about right (the Kings do have good attendance thogu)... Florida and Texas especially don't need three teams between the two of them  It's summer there all year 'round and they and the Ducks have puddles in their arenas most of the time.

Man can you imagine how the play of the league would improve if it was cut down to 24 or 26 teams  That'd be really cool to see... every team would pick up a couple decent players and lose fringe guys. It'd be interesting to watch.
