SAN BERNARDINO (KTLA) -- A San Bernardino County man says he was aiming for the family dog when he accidentally shot and killed his wife, according to police.

61-year-old Brant Bater, of Twin Peaks, was initially booked on suspicion of manslaughter, but the charges were amended to murder after investigators uncovered new evidence, the sheriff's department said.

Deputies were called to the 500 block of Sunset View Road in San Bernardino shortly after 1 p.m. on Friday.

Faith Ellen Bater, also 61, was found dead of a gunshot wound, according to authorities.

Brant Bater told deputies he accidentally shot his wife instead of the family dog, which he said was acting aggressively toward him.

Bater was arrested and taken to the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga.

Investigators say Bater has been cooperative.

it's so sad...the guy has an issue with a member of his house (canine or otherwise)
and feels the need to kill it/them/her with a gun
