CRESTVIEW — A 39-year-old man caught lurking in the trees on the side of James Lee Boulevard with a flashlight and a machete on Nov. 12 was charged with carrying a concealed weapon, according to an Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office arrest report.
A deputy driving on U.S. Highway 90 just past the Okaloosa County Jail noticed a light shining through the trees on the roadside and saw a man dressed all in black with a hooded sweatshirt covering his head. He got out and confronted the man, who said he was walking to a convenience store "to purchase smokes for his girlfriend," the report said.
The deputy noticed the man was holding his right arm against his side, and the man said he'd been bitten by a spider and was in a lot of pain. The deputy asked him what he was holding, and he pulled out a machete.
The deputy ordered the man to drop the machete, and he did, explaining that he was carrying the machete with him to the store for protection, the report said.
