Spencer Cundari, 42, of Portland was sharing the Cove in Seaside this morning with another surfer when a tail rose from the water next to her, he said.
"It slapped the water three times, and then it was gone," he said. "It was violent."
She "gathered herself" and climbed on his board, he remembers. They paddled 400 or so yards to shore and waited for an ambulance to arrive.
The woman was taken to Providence Seaside Hospital, where staff said she asked that her condition remain private.
Cundari described the tail he saw as white-colored, but couldn't recall its size.
"Things happened so fast," he said.
The woman sustained a bite on her right calf, he said -- "a good puncture."
The bite was "very minor," according to Dale Camrath, captain of the Seaside Fire Department. He arrived on the beach as paramedics carried the woman to the ambulance.
Camrath said the bite was delivered by "some kind of marine creature."
It was a shark, Cundari said.
"I never thought it wasn't a shark," he said. "It definitely wasn't a seal."
