Crew of a Russian aircraft carrier has been accused of dumping waste into waters off the north coast of Scotland.
The 65,000-tonne carrier Admiral Kuznetsov and other Russian warships have taken shelter from severe weather 30 miles off the Moray Firth.
Crew on the HMS York, shadowing the Russian fleet, witnessed sailors dumping black bags overboard, a Royal Navy spokesman has confirmed.
The Royal Navy has reported the Russian sailors to the relevant authorities over concerns they have breached maritime pollution regulations.
Naval fleets are permitted to put some waste, including food, overboard, but concerns are being raised that plastic bags were being discarded, which is against the rules.
SNP defence spokesman Angus Robertson MP said: "Given the bad weather conditions the Russian vessels are very welcome to shelter off the Scottish coast, but it is more than bad manners to dispose of waste by simply throwing it overboard.
"This is in contravention of agreements and normal practice and I think we need answers from the Russian and UK governments.
“Have the appropriate authorities been informed? What was disposed of? Why was it not done properly?"
The vessels began arriving in the Moray Firth on Monday.
Other ships and support vessels are included in the fleet, sheltering 30 miles from the Scottish shore.
Type-42 destroyer HMS York was deployed from Portsmouth and met with the fleet in international waters off the east coast of Scotland.
The destroyer, part of the Royal Navy fleet ready escort, is shadowing the vessels while they remain in British waters.
A Royal Navy spokesman said the Russian sailors had "taken advantage of the relative shelter" of the Moray Firth to avoid the weather further out at sea.
He said the boats were on their way to exercises in the Mediterranean.
