Villagers barricaded themselves inside a pub as a half naked resident banged an axe on the window when he got fed-up with people walking through his garden.

Terrified patrons wedged the pool table against the door as 53-year-old William Power wielded his axe as a warning to the people who used his garden as a short cut.

Power flew into a rage after repairing his garden fence only to see it breached for the latest time, on June 3.

He lost his temper and stormed down the main street in Almondbank to confront the trespassers, who saw him armed with an axe and fled into the village pub, locking the door to prevent him getting in.

As the villagers hid inside the Almondbank Inn, Power, who was stripped to the waist, repeatedly tapped the woodcutter's axe on the window as he stared in.

Power, now of Cornton Place, Crieff, admitted breaching the peace by brandishing an axe and causing fear and alarm to patrons by using it to hit the pub window.

Defence solicitor Linda Clark told Perth Sheriff Court: "Locals in the community would squeeze through a gap in the fence and run over part of the garden to access a wooded area behind the property, rather than walking a significant distance around the property.

"On numerous occasions he had carried out repairs to the fence. He had blocked the gap to avoid having people continue to use the garden as a shortcut.

"One group consistently squeezed through or kicked over the wood he used to block the gap so they could go through his garden."

Power lost his job and his relationship as a result of his actions, the court heard.

Sheriff Lindsay Foulis told him his behaviour was "astonishing", but said he would be spared jail because he was a first offender. He was sentenced to carry out 240 hours of community service.
