That trailer slowly spelled out the title to the movie in the piecemeal 'Aliens' style, and also some of the imagery seems to be straight out of that earlier film. Is there any connection?

It's going to be in the same universe as Alien. Ridley Scott is the director of Prometheus, it's his baby. It's a sort of a prequel, supposedly taking place 50 or 60 years before the original takes place. We may or may not see the evolution/creation of the Alien, we may or may not see the race commonly known as "The Space Jockey", and there may be something regarding the Weyland Yutani corporation, or it's origins.

Prometheus is the name of the ship in this movie. The Prometheus myth supposedly provides a background theme of this movie.

The original was Alien, not Aliens, like you originally posted. Aliens was the sequel and it's ship's name was the Sulaco.

It didn't have a name. Prometheus is the name of the human ship in this film. As far as I know, Prometheus has never been used before within the Alien Franchise.
