REDONDO BEACH, Calif. (KTLA) -- A 95-year-old man is recovering in the hospital after being attacked by a swarm of bees and stung nearly 500 times.

Louis Todero was walking along the 1700 block of Ruxton Lane at 2:50 p.m. Wednesday when he was stung 400-to-500 times, according to medical personnel.

It is believed the bees were agitated by a fumigator that was in the process of trying to exterminate their hive in the attic space of a nearby apartment.

The fumigator fled to avoid being stung and the man just happened to be in the area when the bees attacked, according to Redondo Beach police Sergeant Phil Keenan.

Todero was rushed to Little Company of Mary Hospital, in Torrance, and was in stable condition.

The Los Angeles Vector Control has set up warning signs and cordoned off the area.

A different exterminator planned to fumigate the bees on Thursday, waiting until evening, when the bees are less energized.

Four police officers were assigned to go door-to-door in the neighborhood and warn people to stay inside, with their doors and windows closed.

Exterminators say the hive is sizable and could stretch from the roof of the apartment building into the walls.

Authorities said it was "probable" that the bees involved were Africanized bees, which are known for becoming aggressive when disturbed.
