What at first appeared to be a fatal crash turned out to be the result of a mobile-meth-making explosion inside a car on a Lakeland roadway, the Lakeland Police Department said Wednesday.

Police were called to an overturned vehicle on Tuesday on the 3900 block of Drane Field Road, the department said, arriving to find a dead driver later identified as 36-year-old Clifford Ellison.

Witnesses of the crash told police that there had been "some sort of commotion" inside the vehicle just before it crashed. Officers soon discovered there had been another person inside the car.

Police identified the second man as 26-year-old Jerek L. Evans, who officials said fled on foot after the vehicle overturned. Police say they soon discovered the crash didn't cause Ellison's death.

Evidence inside the car and information from Evans revealed that the men had been mixing chemicals in a glass liquor bottle, in an attempt to make so-called "shake and bake" methamphetamine.

However, the bottle exploded, police say, firing glass shards into Ellison's neck. Police say he was apparently fatally wounded by the shrapnel and lost control of the vehicle, causing the crash.

The death remains under investigation, and an autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday afternoon. The police department said Wednesday that no charges had yet been filed against Evans.

Also referred to as "one pot," "shake and bake" is a method of methamphetamine production preferred by some users because it is simpler and less cumbersome than the typical meth lab set-up.

The method, though obviously dangerous, requires only a handful of ingredients and a container such as a plastic soda bottle in which to mix them, and does not require a heat source to "cook."
