SYDNEY - Some Australian women found to have ruptured breast implants made by the French manufacturer at the center of a growing global scandal say their doctors had told them the damage was due to their own behavior, such as hanging out too much laundry or engaging in rough sex.

One woman whose Poly Implant Prosthese (PIP) implants were found to be leaking and asked for them to be removed was instead given another set made by the same manufacturer after her doctor claimed that her vigorous handling of laundry items had caused the damage.

Lorraine Long, founder of the Medical Error Action Group, said in other cases that came to light before the current wave of publicity, doctors had told women the damage was due to their overly intense gym workouts, tight bras or excessive squeezing by amorous husbands.

Nearly 100 women have contacted lawyers and patient support groups to share their experiences with the implants, made by the now-bankrupt French company -- approaching three times the 37 cases known to Australia's regulator, the Therapeutic Goods Administration.

At least two law firms are collecting names of affected women with a view to launching a possible class action, after a recommendation by French health authorities that women should have the implants removed triggered a wave of concern around the world.

An estimated 9054 Australian women received PIP implants between 2002 and 2010. In April 2010 unused stocks of PIP implants were recalled by the maker following concerns by French authorities of higher than average failure rates.
