Okay, a bit off the wall, but do any of y'all have a portable gen? IF so, what type do you have and would you recommend it?

Here's my situation.

I'm going to buy one, was thinking in the 3kw range for running basic hand tools (grinders, drills etc) so I can start refinishing my pipe fence. After looking around, I'm thinking I may be better off to go ahead and step up to the 6-7kw range in order to get a 25-30 amp 240 outlet as well. This way I can also use it to power my water well, along with house lights and refrigerator in a power loss. Unfortunately, most of what I've found it the 6-7kw range is in the $600-700 range (more than I wanted to spend)

I've got a 5500w Porter Cable gen with the Briggs motor. It powers everything in my house just fine or my 220v welder as needed.

If I had it to do over again I would have spent a little more and bought a Honda powered genny, much quieter and better on fuel

I don't have one but from what I've heard the Honda is the way to go.

You could prolly mount it in the bed of your truck and make it portable if you hooked a propane tank to it if you really want it though...

Well, I decided to treat myself to a new chainsaw instead. Picked up a 20" Husqvarna 455 Rancher today. My bud says not to buy small gen, as I can use his until ready to buy a bigger one.

Lance, I had thought of a standby gen like you linked to, but the $$ is a bit prohibitive. I get can get everything I need on a 120/240v 7kw portable. The biggest problem with a portable is the fuel usage. I'm checking into propane or diesel powered now and will probably buy one later in the year.
