According to the Onslow County Sheriff's Office, Ward will be taken to Onslow Memorial Hospital for possible injuries that may have occurred to Ward's rectum where it is believed he may have concealed the .38, six-inch barrel revolver.

Authorities say that while the gun was not loaded, it was test fired by the OCSO CSI to determine its functionality and it was in operational condition.

A fugitive wanted on a murder charge in Atlanta and arrested here earlier this week is accused of hiding a handgun in his rectum while in the Onslow County Jail.

Michael Leon Ward, 22, of Sugar Lake Drive in Canton, Ga., was charged late Thursday night by the Onslow County Sheriff's Office with fugitive warrants from the State of Georgia for murder and armed robbery.

Ward was also charged by the OCSO with resisting a public officer, possession of drug paraphernalia and simple possession of a Schedule VI control substance.

The N.C. State Highway Patrol charged him with driving while impaired, speeding, unlawfully passing an emergency vehicle, reckless driving to endanger the public, resisting a public officer, providing fictitious information and no operators license.

State Trooper Scott Merritt on Monday morning stopped Ward who passed him at 90 mph on U.S. 17 in a 2010 Dodge Avenger registered to Anthony Keith West. Ward, and a woman with him, Vanessa Laranda Ragland, 18, with ties to Atlanta and Jacksonville, are accused of rolling up the windows and locking the doors.

Ragland was charged with assault on a government official. She was later charged with resisting public officer and providing fictitious information. She is being held in the Onslow County Jail under a $2,500 bond.

Ward allegedly resisted arrest, was subdued with a stun gun and taken to Onslow Memorial Hospital where he was given “a shot to calm down,” according court records.

Ward was booked into the Onslow County Jail where he was charged with lying about his identity.
While behind bars Ward called out to jailers claiming someone was trying to kill him and that a gun was in his cell. Jailers searched his cell and found a .38-caliber pistol in the toilet. Ward claimed he found the gun in his bunk and tossed it into the toilet, according to an affidavit by Sheriff's Sgt. Rocky Maestas.

The gun lacked bullets and no bullets were found in Ward's cell. Maestas served a search warrant on the vehicle Ward was driving when he was arrested. It was not immediately clear whether Maestas found ammunition, but after the search he charged Ward with possession of marijuana and digital scales, according to arrest warrants.

Ward is being held with no bond while awaiting extradition.

It was not immediately clear how investigators discovered Ward was in wanted in Georgia or the details of the alleged homicide and robbery.

JACKSONVILLE, NC (WECT/WITN) – A man wanted for first degree murder in the Atlanta area was arrested in Onslow County. Deputies in Onslow County say the man hid a large handgun in a body cavity.

According to the sheriff's office, Trooper Scott Merritt spotted Michael Ward driving more than 90 mph on Highway 17. He and another trooper from Duplin County worked together to stop Ward.

Highway Patrol told WITN Ward rolled up his windows and locked his car when troopers approached. Both he and a woman in his vehicle claiming to be his wife refused to roll down the windows.

WITN is reporting troopers were able to get the door open and had to taze Ward, who was then taken to the hospital after complaints of heart problems and being unable to walk.

The sheriff's office said Ward was examined at the hospital and released back into Trooper Merritt's custody, who took Ward to be booked into the jail.

Ward was strip searched before being booked and underwent the standard "squat and cough" procedure. According to the sheriff's office, Ward used another person's identity during the arrest and booking process.

Detention officers found a .38 caliber handgun in Ward's cell the next day. Jailers eventually discovered Ward stored the 6-inched barrel gun in his rectum. He will be taken to the hospital for examination of possible injuries.

The sheriff's office said the gun was not loaded at the time, but was test fired by investigators to determine its functionality, and it was in operational condition.

Ward is wanted for a homicide that happened in the Atlanta area in October 2011.

Investigators with the Onslow County Sheriff's Office are assisting the Atlanta Police Department with their investigation.
