An Azusa man is behind bars for allegedly trying to murder his wife by poisoning her Rice Krispies.
Paramedics responded to a call around 8:40pm Thursday at a home in the 200 block of North Dalton Avenue after the 51-year-old woman ingested a poisonous chemical. She "noticed a horrible smell and taste" when she began eating her cereal, according to Cpl. Randy Schmidt, reports San Gabriel Valley Tribune. The woman's 17-year-old daughter made the 911 call.
The victim's husband, Fernando Porras, 43, accompanied his wife to Foothill Presbyterian Hospital then fled once police arrived, claiming he was taking a smoke break. Officers said Porras' behavior raised suspicions.
Investigators determined Porras placed poison in his wife's cereal. Police tracked him down at a 7-11 store near 5th Street and Rockvale Avenue and arrested him Thursday night. Porras was booked on suspicion of attempted murder early Friday morning at the Azusa Police Department jail.
CBS LA reports the chemical used was the all-purpose cleaner Goof Off. The quantity found in her cereal was enough to kill her. She was released from the hospital in good condition Friday morning.
Family members told police Porras made incriminating statements about the incident, and the victim's daughter says her father battled a drug addiction.
Porras is being held in lieu of $1 million bail.
