ASHEVILLE — When stealing someone’s cellphone, it’s probably best not to answer it when the victim calls, and better still not to offer to sell it back along with other stolen items.
But police say that’s exactly what happened after a couple reported their car had been broken into Tuesday evening while it was parked at Asheville Mall. The thief made off with two cellphones, a digital camera, some prescription medicine and a hat.
After officers completed a report, the victims called their stolen phones and spoke with the suspect, later identified as Andrew Patrick Jones, Asheville police Lt. Wally Welch said. They then met with Jones at his West Asheville residence.
Once they identified the stolen items, Jones told the man and woman he would return them “for a price,” Welch said. “He also mentioned that when they came back with the money that he would be willing to sell them some ‘weed’ if they wanted.”
“You can’t make this stuff up,” Welch said.
The victims left and immediately called police. Responding officers searched the residence and recovered the victims’ property along with a small amount of marijuana, he said.
Jones, 21, was charged with breaking and entering a motor vehicle, felony larceny, misdemeanor larceny, misdemeanor marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia. Bond was set at $7,000.
Jones’ previous felony convictions include larceny, possession of a controlled substance and breaking and entering motor vehicles, according to N.C. Department of Correction records. He was sentenced to 24 months of supervised probation in January 2010.
