Some respond to Japan earthquake by pointing to global warming

By Amanda Carey - The Daily Caller

Published: 3:13 PM 03/11/2011

Hours after a massive earthquake rattled Japan, environmental advocates connected the natural disaster to global warming. The president of the European Economic and Social Committee, Staffan Nilsson, issued a statement calling for solidarity in tackling the global warming problem.

“Some islands affected by climate change have been hit,” said Nilsson. “Has not the time come to demonstrate on solidarity – not least solidarity in combating and adapting to climate change and global warming?”

“Mother Nature has again given us a sign that that is what we need to do,” he added.

Global Warming enthusiasts have also taken to Twitter to raise awareness of the need to respond to the earthquake by finally acting on climate change. And the Competitive Enterprise Institute’s Lee Doren compiled some of the best ones.

Some examples:

AliceTMBFan said “2 hours of geography earlier talking about Japan has left me thinking…maybe global warming is way more serious then we thought…”

Arbiterofwords tweeted “I’m worried that Japan earthquake, on top of other recent natural ‘disasters’, is a sign we’ve passed point of no return for climate change.”

MrVikas said “Events like the #Japan #earthquake and #tsunami MUST keep #climate change at forefront of policy thought: http://bit.ly/cZe8To #environment

Tayyclayy noted her frustration by tweeting “An earthquake with an 8.9 magnitude struck Japan.. And some say climate change isn’t real?!”

DanFranklin postulated “Never really believed all this global warming talk, but after the earthquake in NZ and today in Japan. Maybe we’ve ruined the world.”

And TeamIanHarding tweeted “While Japan witnessed an earthquake we were talking about the problems that global warming leads to in school. Think. Pray. And change.”

Do they have a point?

“Global warming alarmists will exploit any natural disaster to promote their anti-fossil fuel agenda,” Tom Borelli of the Free Enterprise Project told The Daily Caller, adding that the climate change reaction is a result of the “global warming spin machine.”

“First it’s global warming, then it’s climate change, now it’s probably tectonic instability – no doubt all caused by man,” he said.

When contacted by TheDC, Dan Weiss, Director of Climate Strategy at the Center for American Progress also expressed skepticism at the link between global warming and the earthquake in Japan.

“I am not a scientist,” said Weiss, “but I have never heard of a link between global warming and earthquakes.”

I'm sure Al Gore will jump on this wagon quickly, then start another $200,000 per appearance lecture tour with a few of his pseudo enviornmental experts to back him up.

It's been all over the news tonight that the earthquakes can be blamed on "super moon".

Others have blamed it on God, a lack of God, astrology, astronomy, a sign of Nostradamus or the end of the short calendar, Godzilla....

It's all dribble... plate tectonics however, is not  And I think the basics of the concept can be picked up by most 8th graders...

More disturbing was the amount of US folks defining the earthquake as payback for Pearl Habour.
That was disturbing and disgusting.

Neither have I!

Besides, the generation most affected still feel that the victories on the battlefield then capped by the A-Bombs settled the score long ago!

I find this to be highly suspect, either it's an Onion story, or just inane comments by blathering idiots!

In fact, the U.S. military were the first called into help, as usual!

There is very little anti-Japanese feeling associated with WWII anymore, anywhere in the US. Part of it is that it was a long time ago. Part of it is that US forces have been stationed in Japan for a long time, and most servicemen who've been stationed there come back with a lot of respect for the people and the culture (compare that to the middle east . . . you can bet Pfc Snuffy ain't coming home with an Afghan bride).

The only place that you still see that sentiment publicly is in China and some other Asian nations.

There was some itchiness back in the '80s when it looked like the Japanese were buying up our trophy properties, but that's a long time ago -- most people would feel much more comfortable with a Japanese investor than a Chinese one today.

As Huey Long once said "There are critters out there that'll fool you by getting up on their hind legs and talking"

More seriously, Hikari Kusugi -- I wouldn't want you to take those sentiments to reflect anything other than the usual internet trolling.

For a better sense of where American public opinion is on Japan and the war, before this event, consider Clint Eastwood's movie "Letters from Iwo Jima". We're very far from Pearl Harbor when you have Clint Eastwood directing a film in Japanese about Japanese soldiers . . . I'd also say that Steven Spielberg's "The Pacific" is quite even handed. Neither film sugarcoats the brutality of the Pacific War, but neither portrays the Japanese as monsters-

There will never be a shortage of vile people who poke their noses out during a time of crisis like this. I think they are folks who's self-esteem is so low, they'll do virtually anything for attention, including behaving like a barbarian while the rest of the world tries to be supportive, and helpful

I was reading a few of the reader comments attached to the many quake articles featured on Yahoo, and 99% of what I saw was classy, and dignified. That other one percent was represented by small-minded idiots with black hearts. I'm sure you can find them in all countries. What's important to understand, is that talk is cheap. It's actions that count now, and I'm very proud as a citizen of earth to see upwards of 70 nations doing what they can to aid the Japanese.

If a few americans need to validate their existence by spewing this kind of venom, then all I can do is offer their sad souls pitty.

The rest of us may not be perfect, but at least we step up to the plate when called
