A 50-year-old man barricaded himself in his Bayview-Hunters Point apartment Tuesday morning after concluding that someone stole and ate his chicken meal, police said.

The man discovered that something was a-fowl just before 8 a.m. Neighbors told officers that he grabbed a knife and walked around his San Francisco apartment complex, demanding to know who stole the food, according to police.

Officers responded to the 1600 block of Oakdale Avenue at about 8:13 a.m. The man had locked himself in his apartment, and a neighbor told police that the man was threatening to hurt himself, said police spokesman Sgt. Daryl Fong.

The man refused to leave his apartment after officers arrived, so they requested the help of the hostage negotiation team, Fong said. After some time, the man surrendered voluntarily and was transported to a hospital for evaluation. He was not arrested.

Police could not speak about whether a theft had actually occurred. Fong acknowledged, however, that “it must have been good chicken.”
