White House Economic Adviser: 'We Need a Global Minimum Tax'
2:41 PM, Feb 13, 2012 • By DANIEL HALPER

http://www.weeklystandard.com/blogs/white-house-economic-adviser-we-need-global-minimum-tax_626749.html

Gene Sperling, director of the White House's national economic council, said today at an official meeting that "we need a global minimum tax":

“He supports corporate tax reform that would reduce expenditures and loopholes, lower rates for people investing and creating jobs in the U.S., due so further for manufacturing, and that we need to, as we have the Buffett Rule and the individual tax reform, we need a global minimum tax so that people have the assurance that nobody is escaping doing their fair share as part of a race to the bottom or having our tax code actually subsidized and facilitate people moving their funds to tax havens," Sperling said.

The White House adviser then said that more details would be forthcoming, though "not in gory detail."

"But we will say more, perhaps not in gory detail, but in more detail, before the end of the month. And in terms of the revenues, the president is looking for shared sacrifice. This budget is a Democratic budget that has savings in Medicaid, it has savings from new beneficiaries, Medicare in 2017, it has agriculture civilian retirement savings. It has a lot of very tough choices."

how about during a recession you initiate a tax on people who make...let's say 500 grand and over per year.

at least they could withstand it...

It's not right that a huge company can move their corporate mailing address to Dublin and still sell 10 billion dollars worth of shit here..

Haven't rock stars been doing that for years? Mailing address/cottage in the Honduras or similar and getting huge breaks on tax because of it?

He wants to lower the capital gains rate and have a 30% minimum over $1M? That doesn't make sense to me.

I think everyone in the country should have all their money given to the government and then let the politicians hand out what they think is fair to everyone :)

No, it's not the smallest corporations that escape paying taxes. The biggest ones do however. That's where this concept comes into play. You know there are quite a lot of highly profitable corporations in America that pay nothing in taxes, but have made substantial donations to those elected officials who continually back the laws that allow them to escape paying taxes.

Hmm. No, that couldn't be dodgy could it? :-k:wavey:

There is an untapped market of labor in Africa. We should take over countries and industrialize them and then tax the workers.

Its a fucking spending problem, not an income problem. These socialist fuckers would triple the taxes if they could and still spend a whole shitload more than comes in.

Most small businesses are incorporated and are therefore corporations. Small businesses are the #1 employer in this country. Small businesses pay plenty of taxes. If you've ever owned a business you'd know that.

What you are so against is the mega corporations like GE that have an army of lawyers to make sure they pay little to no taxes. I can't even be mad at GE because they are only doing what the tax code allows.

Fix the tax code and fix the problem.

But, but ,but, that would be too easy. Instead, let's promote class warfare in an effort to get reelected.

It's not the small corporations. They lack the influence to create havoc. It's the large multi nationals that are avoiding taxes while cornering the market. The things they do actually break down the very system of capitalism.

I do own a small business... Not a corp. however.. An llc. And I am well aware of the taxes I pay..

I thought what I was annoyed at was pretty clear.. Next time I will use the verbage "mega corporations".

Class warfare is easier than fixing the problem.

The tax code is proof that both parties are fucking us. Those both had a hand in writing it, they both had a hand in adding loopholes, and they both shy away from fixing it.

Herman Cain scared the establishment. A simple tax code scares politicians because they can't hid political favors in it. Let's ignore 9/9/9 and be a little more realistic. Let's make a really simple example. Here is our new tax code.

1 - 50k = 5%
50k - 200k = 15%
200k - 500k = 25%
500k or more pays 35%

No deductions, no credits, no write offs, nothing. It's impossible to hide political favors in such a simple tax code; however, if the tax code is thousands of pages long you can do all sorts of little tricks.

The mega corporations are only doing what the law allows and it's the politicians that wrote those laws. Be mad at the politicians not the companies who are technically playing by the rules.

Which they are. Seriously, many of the highest earning corporations pay NOTHING in taxes, but have a large list of politicians they donate to. The guilt is and should be spread around here.

It's not playing by the rules if you are essentially bribing people to stack the deck in your favor.

Your and Muddy's anger is fair but misplaced.

I don't blame one party or the other. It's all corrupt and Washington in general is to blame.

So it amazes me that people want to give a corrupt system MORE tax money to play with instead of less.

No, this anti-politician thing is dangerous thinking. There are many corrupt politicians, I call them 'the Republican party', but this trend towards encouraging people to distrust all politicians and all forms of government is self defeating and insidiously dangerous.

It is far from misplaced to feel that corporations have done bad things. Even if you started with a complete set of freshmen officials, the corruption would continue because some people can always be bought, and the corporations are buying people. They are doing it RBP...it's cheaper to spend millions on buying favorable law than to just pay fair taxes.

I know you are a conservative, but you need to be angry about the mega corporate culture...it is destroying this country. It has gutted the middle class, ruined our manufacturing base, and created a massive disparity in wealth. It has done this through manipulation and corruption. It is anathema to true and pure forms of capitalism, to freedom, and to Christian values.

However, what can I say, really? I am speaking of things here that fall on deaf ears. They fall on deaf ears because what is being heard is endless Fox News propaganda...the poor are evil, corporations are good, taxation is the biggest problem in the world, war is good, liberalism is evil, anyone 'not like us' cannot be trusted. I can't erase hours of daily mental programming and brainwashing with a mere handful of written words.

So I will go and be silly and let those who can still hear think about what I've said, and ignore the predicable backlash from those who cannot break free of the lies.

And with this one small opening section of your post, you have nicely summed up why nobody listens to anything you say or takes you seriously. Your views are so hyper-partisan and removed from reality that it makes nearly everything you post into a joke.

Curious to believe it's only Republicans who corrupted the tax code. As we know, all spending bills originate in the House of Representatives.

Democrats controlled the House from 1949-1993. That's 44 years straight. If you look at the tax code that's when most of the modifications were made. For the icing on the cake, of those 44 years Democrats also controlled the Senate for 36. The President only signs bills, he does not create them.

I use humor to break the news dude. If you can't suss out the sarcasm, you'll never understand anything I post. Plenty of people take me seriously...but YOU have proved my point...I cannot reach those who will not hear. There is a deep set group of far right people on this forum, and they are beyond logic.

Whatever you need to tell yourself dude...every political post you make you rail against anyone that doesn't agree with you and take shot after shot at republicans and conservatives. Then when people call you out on it you turn it into a shit storm and have to invariably add someone new to your ignore list because you can't debate things without turning it all personal.

I love how you always fall back on the "I was joking" or "it was sarcasm, obviously you are too dumb to get it" defense. You may be able to fool some people and even yourself, but you don't fool me. You know exactly what you are posting and you know what you want the desired effect to be. I make an observation about your posting and you have to turn it back personal on me with a veiled insult.

All I can say is keep it up and see where it gets you. ;)
