A Powys cattle breeder whose pedigree Limousin bull sold at auction for a record UK price says he had no idea he would land the "unreal" sum.

Glyn Vaughan, of Machynlleth, said he had hoped Dolcorsllwyn Fabio would sell for £40,000 in Carlisle on Saturday.

The farmer watched as the bidding climbed to £126,000, beating the previous record sale price of £105,000.

He said: "He's been an excellent shape ever since he was small. There's always been something special about him."

'Different world'
Mr Vaughan said he would have been happy if Dolcorsllwyn Fabio has topped the Welsh record, which was set four years ago with the sale of another of his animals for 32,000 guineas (£33,600).

He said: "When it hit 80,000, I hoped it would reach 100,000 to match the previous [UK] record. I'm not sure if I remember what happened after that.

"It was completely unreal. It was a different world to what I and most breeders ever experience really.

"I was very lucky that two of the wealthiest breeders in the country wanted him. The sale was an excellent sale."

The bull was sold to Alan Jenkinson of Penrith, Cumbria.

Experts say that although the price was high the new owner should be able to quickly recoup the money through breeding.

Mr Vaughan attended the auction with wife Nia.

He said: "She was with me four years ago when I broke the Welsh record, so I may take her to more sales."
