Swimmers, more than any other athletes, depend on the razor's edge to help performance. They long have shaved before competition, in order to make themselves more aerodynamic in the water.
But the National Federation of State High School Associations has a rule that all of that stubble-removing must be done away from the site of meets, which makes sense. Do you really want a locker room full of teens nervously wielding razors just before their big race?
Alas, that rule has cost the girls swim team at Broadneck High in Maryland its county championship title.
The Baltimore Sun reports school systems officials learned that one of Broadneck's swimmers shaved on-site at the Anne Arundel County championship meet on Feb. 10, and that girl was disqualified. After a redistribution of points Broadneck dropped to third and Severna Park took the title.
Broadneck coach Colleen Winans also was punished by not being allowed to be at last weekend's regional championships.
And this will go down as one time when a team truly did lose by a whisker.
