A Chattanooga woman has been arrested after police said she threw a drinking glass that hit her son in the head because she was mad that she had been awakened to take her children to school.
Chirika Andriea Alexander, 29, of 7631 Austin Dr., is charged with aggravated child abuse and child abuse and neglect.
Police said she told her sons to say that the injury came because the boys had been fighting.
Police went to the Alexander home to check on why the boy who was hit was not at school. Administrators at Barger Elementary checked with his brother, who said his brother was bleeding from the head.
Officers said it took several attempts to get Ms. Alexander to come to the door.
Officers saw three staples on the back of her son's head. She said the boys had been fighting and one threw a red plastic remote control truck at the other. The boy who was hit agreed that was what happened.
Officers went to the school to verify the account with the other boy. He said "his mother woke up mad at them for waking her up to take them to school." He said she "started yelling at them and picked up a glass and threw it" at the brother, striking him in the back of the head.
He said his mother then told him to clean up the glass. She took the injured son to the bathroom to try to wash the blood from his hair.
Police said the boy who was hurt finally changed his story, and that the mother also eventually confessed. She said she took her son to the hospital after first attending court that morning.
