A Glendale man was booked on one count of child abuse Wednesday after police suspect he choked his 6-year-old daughter with pliers, according to a court document.

The incident was reported to Glendale police by the girl's school last year on Dec. 20 after a teacher noticed the red marks on her neck, a police probable cause statement said.

The girl told investigators her father took her to the storage shed and put pliers around her neck while no one else was around, and she couldn't breathe, the document said.

Police believe the abuse happened around Dec. 15 when the young girl was reading a "Dora the Explorer" book, and her father wanted her to be cleaning. The girl told a child interview specialist that her father said "books are not good for her," the filing said.

Police arrested the father on Wednesday and took several pliers from the home for the investigation. The father denied the allegations during questioning and said his daughter probably got the neck injury while playing, the filing said.

The girl's mother told police there were on-going domestic violence issues in their marriage she left mostly unreported. She said their marital problems had stemmed from their different parenting styles, including whether to let the girl read, court documents said.
