MIDDLETOWN — A city special education teacher allegedly admits to having sex with her male student and sending him naked pictures of herself from her cell phone in an arrest warrant unsealed Friday.
Christine Powell, 39, 24 Dobson Circle, pleaded not guilty on Feb. 22 through her attorney, John Maxwell. She was arrested and charged with second-degree sexual assault on Feb. 10. As of Friday, she had not posted her $150,000 bond.
Assistant Principal Colleen Weiner told police that Powell was placed on administrative leave as of Nov. 23, 2011, pending the outcome of the investigation.
Police were assigned to investigate a “possible improper relationship” between Powell and a student whom Powell had been teaching from eighth grade at Woodrow Wilson Middle School through 10th grade at Middletown High School, according to the warrant, which had been statutorily sealed for 14 days but was unsealed after a hearing Friday.
The victim’s mother reported to police that she was concerned about the relationship between Powell and the victim after allegedly finding out that Powell pretended to be the victim’s mother and signed a juvenile summons for an incident where the victim was charged with shoplifting, according to the warrant. The victim’s mother told police that Powell “was very involved” with the victim since eighth grade. At the time, the mother appreciated the effort, according to the warrant.
