A man fishing off a railroad bridge was struck and killed by a train during rush hour Wednesday, snarling traffic on nearby Biscayne Boulevard for hours.

The incident began about 6 p.m. when two men were fishing from the narrow train bridge near 179th Street.

The two were surprised by the freight train and tried to get out of its way, said Aventura police Maj. William Washa.

One jumped out of the train’s path, but Ian Campbell, 30, was struck. He was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he died.

The incident brought the train to a halt and forced traffic on the boulevard, between 154th and 179th streets, to be rerouted well into Wednesday night.

The investigation into the accident is expected to continue Thursday.
