VIRGINIA BEACH -- A man has managed to rack up 25 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol. But now, that man is behind bars - again.
39-year old Tracy Michael Decker was sentenced on Tuesday to seven years in prison.
According to the Commonwealth Attorney's office, Decker has more than 25 arrests for driving under the influence in his lifetime. Two were in Virginia, and the remaining offenses happened in either Alabama or Georgia.
"Because of the interstate laws and because of the way he was basically traveling around, he was able to rack up I believe 25 or 26 DUIs," said Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney, Eli DeJarnette.
In addition to the prison time, a judge ordered Decker to remain on good behavior for 20 years after his release, complete substance abuse treatment, refrain from driving for 20 years, and to abstain from the use of alcohol and non-prescription drugs.
Among Decker's offenses was a DUI that he received after an incident on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. In January, 2006, he stopped to pay the toll but argued with the toll booth employee. Police ended up responding to the scene. Decker was found to be driving with a blood alcohol content of .28. The Commonwealth Attorney says that inside the vehicle, he had an open container of alcohol and two four-year-old children that were not in safety seats or seat belts.
Decker pled guilty to that offense in Virginia Beach Circuit Court, and on July 17, 2006 he received a 20-year prison sentence with 15 years suspended.
Decker was released from the penitentiary in August 2010. On January 6, 2011, he was arrested for DUI in Alabama. He was subsequently arrested for DUI on March 11, March 14, and April 3, 2011 in Alabama. These new offenses were violations of the conditions of his suspended sentence ordered in Virginia Beach Circuit Court in July 2006.
