SLIDELL, La. -- A man was arrested after he admitted to growing marijuana, in which the grow lamp ended up sparking a fire in Covington, St. Tammany Parish sheriff's deputies said.
The fire began about 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday in the 19000 block of 9th Avenue.
While battling the blaze, fire crews found a marijuana grow inside the smoldering home.
Firefighters contacted the Sheriff’s Office after they discovered the burned marijuana grow in the attic. The home’s renter, 35-year-old Philip Poteet, admitted to firemen at the scene that he was growing marijuana and that a grow lamp set his house ablaze.
Investigators said they found numerous items for growing marijuana and seized lamps, timers, soil and marijuana.
Poteet told detectives that he was growing marijuana, but that it was for personal or medicinal use.
