AN Illinois man has been arrested on suspicion of burning his 11-year-old son with an iron in a bid to make the boy confess to stealing a dollar from him, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

Josue Manrique, 35, of Joliet, Illinois, was charged with assaulting a child, authorities said yesterday (local time).

Police Commander Brian Benton said Manrique had returned home "on edge" early Sunday morning after a night of drinking.

"He'd been watching a boxing match where his fighter had lost and was having transmission problems with his car on the way home," Benton said. "When he came home, he noticed a dollar missing from his dresser and that apparently set him off."

Authorities say Manrique hit his son with a leather belt to wake him up, then used an iron to burn the boy's arm and hand as the boy continued to deny taking his money.

Manrique then put the iron on the boy's chin, authorities said.

"He initially claimed he had been struggling with the boy to keep him from burning himself with the iron, but later changed his statement," Benton said.

He has been held in lieu of $100,000 bond.
