AN anonymous collector has paid a record £53.8MILLION for a painting made up of blocks of orange and yellow paint on a red background.

The price for Mark Rothko's 1961 piece called - unsurprisingly - Orange, red, yellow is the highest ever achieved for contemporary art at auction.

The painting went under the hammer at Christie's in New York during an auction of post-war art that fetched £240.5MILLION.

Last week, Edvard Munch's 1895 version of The Scream set a new overall world auction record after selling for £74million.

Before yesterday's sale the highest-grossing Rothko painting cost £45million.

Francis Bacon's Triptych was previously the most expensive contemporary artwork having sold for £53.4million in 2008.

An iconic painting by French artist Yves Klein created with water, a blowtorch and two models sold for £22.6million.

Christie’s auction house said “FC 1” set an auction record for the artist on Tuesday night. The painting was sold to an anonymous buyer, Christie’s said.

The painting was finished a few weeks before the artist’s death in 1962 at age 34 and is considered to be his masterpiece. It was offered for sale by an anonymous Swiss collector.

Amazing, how much money do you have to have in order to justify a purchase like this

Hey they earned it fair and square!

Maybe, or maybe their family earned it, but that not my point. I just wonder how much I would need in the bank to spend that kind of money on some orange paint.

I took a few art classes in school and did some paintings....that looks like a place a person would clean their brushes on

I know there are many forms of art, but I still appreciate a good landscape or accurate portrait. There was a painter who did amazing work reproducing people's eyes and things like kettles and other metallic objects. Can't recall the name of course...but man his stuff looked HD

That's the whole thing isn't it?

Who determines that the large red blob is a fantastic piece of artwork or is it a POS?

I'm useless at art, I'm still on stick men :(

I've been told that I was pretty good with pencil and paper...not bad at oil painting, sucked at watercolors...

Now I have to sit down for hours to draw anything remotely good. If I had talent it's gone now
