MT. AIRY, Ohio - A Mt. Airy mother and father are facing several charges after allegedly telling their children to lie to police about how their 7-year-old daughter was shot Thursday.

Police say the 7-year-old was accidentally shot in the back at 2343 West Northbend Road. Her father, 28-year-old Ricky Singleton, then made the wounded girl walk a half mile away from their home to try and cover it all up, according to officials.

Singleton allegedly tried to hide his pistol in his closet to deceive police. Also, he allegedly told his children to lie to police and say the 7-year-old was hit in a drive-by shooting.

The girl's mother, 25-year-old Tangie Jackson, had a role in the cover up, too, police said. Jackson allegedly hid bloody clothes from police.

When police first responded to the scene, the girl's parents had conflicting stories about what led to their daughter's wound. The parents first said they found out the girl was shot after she complained of back pain and they found a bullet hole in her back.

Officials say that they are still unsure whether it was the 7-year-old who shot herself or her 3-year-old brother who pulled the trigger.

Mt. Airy residents say shootings have become all too common in recent months.

"It's sad, but not surprising, we've had a rash of shootings in just the last six months," said Dana Haigis, a Mt. Airy resident.

The girl was taken to Children's Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Singleton and Jackson both face child endangering, tampering and obstruction charges.
