A 45-year-old Fort Myers woman was arrested on Friday after allegedly lighting a couch on fire and causing significant damage to her apartment building.
Officers with the Fort Myers Police Department arrived at the apartments on DeSoto Avenue and found the fire department attempting to put out a fire in apartment unit #2.
A man, identified as 52-year-old Billy Ray Taylor, stated that he lived inside unit #2 but that he was not home at the time the fire started and he was unsure how it began. Taylor told officers that he lives with 45-year-old Jill Samantha Wooten, who was also standing outside the apartments.
Wooten was observed kicking and spitting at Taylor when he attempted to speak to her. When officers questioned Wooten about the fire, she said she was tired of the couch because it was dirty and smelled of urine, so she set it on fire.
Wooten told officers that she dragged the couch outside of the apartment, poured lighter fluid on it, and lit it on fire.
The fire spread to the structure and damaged the exterior and interior of unit #2, causing the unit to later be determined uninhabitable. It also damaged the roof of the building.
Wooten was arrested and charged with arson and domestic battery.
