A pregnant woman was arrested when she was found asleep behind the steering wheel of her idling car after she had gone to a tattoo parlor in north Houston, left her 1-year-old girl in the car and went inside to get a piercing early Tuesday morning, officials said.
The woman was found asleep in her car about 2:40 a.m. at 5131 North Freeway, according to the Houston Police Department.
Police said the woman is expected to be charged with driving while intoxicated, endangering a child and possession of a controlled substance.
A patrol officer was dispatched to the scene on a call about a woman sleeping in her car, said Kese Smith, an HPD spokesman. Smith said when the officer arrived the woman was found asleep in the car behind the wheel and the engine was running.
A witness told the officer the woman had come into the tattoo parlor to get a piercing but was refused because she appeared to be drunk, Smith said. The woman left and the witness said that’s when the child was seen inside the car.
Smith said the woman was pregnant. Houston Fire Department medical personnel were called to the scene and evaluated her. She was taken to Ben Taub General Hospital.
Police found beer bottles and what appeared to be Xanax in the car, Smith said.
State Child Protective Services were called to the scene for the child.
