NEW YORK (AP) — Samsung's new flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S III, will be launched by all of the Big 4 national U.S. wireless carriers this month, starting at $199, the phone maker said Monday.

The phone will be carried by Verizon Wireless, AT&T Inc., Sprint Nextel Corp. and T-Mobile USA, as well as regional carrier U.S. Cellular, South Korea-based Samsung Electronics Co. said.

T-Mobile and Sprint said they will start selling the phone on June 21. Sprint said the version with 16 gigabytes of memory will cost $200 with a two-year contract. T-Mobile did not say what it would charge. Samsung said the other phone companies will announce specific launch dates and prices later.

The Galaxy series has emerged as the most popular alternative to Apple Inc.'s iPhone. And in a first for a flagship Samsung phone, the Galaxy S III will have the same name across all U.S. carriers. However, carriers won't be selling exactly the same phone. Each one will be selling a model adapted to its network.

Sprint called the previous model, the Galaxy S II, the "Epic 4G Touch" and Verizon didn't sell it at all. The wide launch and consistent naming of the phone is a sign of Samsung's growing clout and ability to build its brand.

Galaxy phones run Google's Android software. The S III has a 4.8-inch screen, for a display area that's nearly twice large as the iPhone's. Yet the phone is slightly thinner and lighter than Apple's phone.

The S III went on sale Europe and the Middle East last week.

Samsung doesn't say how many smartphones it sells, but most analysts estimate that it outsold the 35.1 million iPhones Apple sold in the first three months of this year. Unlike Apple, it sells many smartphone models, most of them at prices well below the iPhone's.

Looks like it will be available June 20 from all major carriers up here too! I guess gone are the days of only half-assed, delayed and limited releases of phones to certain carriers. That was irritating.

I'm going to wait to see what it looks like and how it feels before deciding what phone I'll chose next.

It's interesting to see how Samsung's brand image keeps improving. Carriers perceive the brand name as a selling proposition and don't want to lose that by throwing some retarded branding of their own over an attractive product.

Tell me... How much data will you eat if you stream Pandora for a week?

PorkChopSandwiches

I used Pandora for just 10 minutes over 3G and consumed more than 4MB of data. That level of usage works out to a rate of more than 24MB of data per hour

24MB of data per hour

24 mb x 24 hrs x 7 days 4032 (4 gb)

Muddy

So streaming it 16 hours a day on the 2 weekend days is 64 hours @ 24 mb per hour... 1.5 gigs for the month? I may be OK on the 2 gb plan if I go ahead and upgrade.. Only bad thing is this thing wont work with any of our icompatible devices.

Really though... You couldn't get a Toyota in 2011 that wouldn't accept a digital connection unless it was an ipod.. My daughter had a "Zen" and we could find a decent boom box that would accept a USB..

Your truck has bluetooth I imagine. And if a radio accepts the ipod connection it most likely has an AUX port

Aux = Trash.. My truck is a 2012 so it has the usb and blue tooth.. But the point is that most accessories are geared towards the i-platform. Things are changing slowly, but not fast enough.
