A Bonners Ferry tree house will be chopped down because of its proximity to a water levy in the Kootenai River.
Tremain Albright's emotions surround his tree house overlooking the Kootenai River in Bonners Ferry.
He’s spent about $14,000 converting it into a guest house.
On Monday, the Army Corps of Engineers officially told Tremain the news that his tree and several others in the city are on the chopping block.
Albright says his tree was given a special exemption called a variance back in 2007. He thought that was permanent, but that recently changed.
There are fears the tree could eventually fall and damage the water levy.
If the tree doesn’t go, the city could lose a large chunk of federal funding. City leaders said the levy isn’t safe because of the tree house, and if it stays the Corp would pull about $128,000 used for levy repairs in Bonners Ferry.
