An off-duty Tolleson police officer shot an intruder in his southwest Phoenix home Tuesday afternoon, critically injuring him.

Police said the intruder appeared to be between 16 and 20 years old.

The 25-year-old Tolleson officer was asleep in his home near 91st Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road Tuesday afternoon when he heard a crashing downstairs, according to Sgt. Trent Crump, a Phoenix police spokesman.

The officer, who was not identified by Phoenix police, is a three-year veteran of the Tolleson department.

The officer grabbed a gun and went downstairs to check out the noise. He ended up confronting an intruder inside the home, Crump said. The intruder was carrying a large river rock, and when he raised it, threatening the homeowner, the off-duty officer shot the intruder in the head, according to Crump.

The homeowner called police about 2:45 p.m. and administered CPR until officers arrived, Crump said.

The suspect was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Neighbors told police that earlier in the day there was a group of young people who appeared suspicious -- neighbors thought the group was watching houses, Crump said. Police could not immediately say whether there were any other reported crimes in the area on Tuesday.

Phoenix police homicide detectives are investigating the case, as are Tolleson police personnel who are conducting an internal investigation into the incident.
