FORT MYERS — A Fort Myers high school senior with Ivy League aspirations and a new set of wheels faces a cloudy future after her arrest on felony charges Friday.
Rachel Anne Hachero, 17, was arrested by Lee County deputies after being accused of pistol-whipping her mother and forcing her to buy the teen a car at gunpoint. Hachero, a student at the exclusive Canterbury School in Fort Myers, now faces charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill, unlawful possession of a firearm by a person younger than 18 and battery.
The senior’s arrest conflicts with newspaper and online accounts of her success: She was a member of the school’s Model United Nations team who received honorable mention and third place awards at a Harvard competition; She ran in the Mountain Dew University of Florida Invitational, she and placed 9th in the 2009 Fort Myers Komen Race for the Cure in the 12- to 15-year-old category; She was been accepted into several Ivy League schools on scholarships, according to the report.
The events leading to her arrest began Thursday evening when Hachero called her mother and asked her to co-sign for a car, according to a Sheriff’s Office report. Her mother refused, and the teen threatened to kill her. Around 7 p.m. the same day, the teen returned to her home at the 6700 block of Mossy Glen Drive wielding a 9 mm Sig Sauer handgun.
Hachero pistol-whipped her mother in the head and pointed the gun at the woman’s head and stomach, deputies wrote. The teenager then demanded the mother accompany her to the dealership.
The mother, whom the Daily News is not naming due to the nature of the incident, complied, and the pair went to Sutherlin Nissan, 13985 U.S. 41 South. With the gun inside Hachero’s purse, the mother signed for the car, a 2004 black Nissan 305Z, and Hachero left with her new purchase.
The mother later told deputies she was in fear of her daughter’s actions and was scared to call 911. While Hachero was at school on Friday, the mother went into the girl’s bedroom, checked the teenager’s purse and found the gun, in addition to drugs and paraphernalia, according to the reports.
Deputies arrested Hachero at home. They recovered the gun, one of three reported stolen from a Lee County Port Authority employee’s house in July.
Hachero’s mother declined to prosecute her daughter, however, citing Hachero’s status as an honor student and her acceptance into several Ivy League Schools. Deputies still arrested the teen, and they transported her to the Lee County Juvenile Assessment Center.
Monday, Hachero’s mother declined comment and referred questions to local attorney Jay Brizel. He declined to discuss the case, but confirmed a judge has ruled the girl must stay in juvenile detention.
A spokeswoman for the school, Kathy Edwards, also declined comment pending an ongoing investigation.
