Pontiac is no longer an active car company so it couldn't be on the list.

As for me, both cars are Hondas at #5.

it's surprising...some that I have heard of being reliable didn't make it very high on that list

It mainly depends on if you maintain a car. Look after the small stuff and usually you'll prolong the life of the major components. Build quality is important but is less so as the car gets older.

I bought a VW brand new in '87. $8000 - the dash rattled and the speakers were already not working when I got it. Kept having to replace windows once a year as rocks would pelt the window. Had it for 200,000kms of hard delivery use and for 5 years. Everything was worn out after I was through with it!

I bought my Nissan brand new in '92, for $15,000 and the VW in trade - the interior mirror was loose and the rear package tray was ill-fitting. I still have it, after 330,000 kms. New engine at 200,000 and transmission at 250,000 and people think it's a new-ish car.

I have had 2 used Ford vans:

One (1992) I had for 8 years and hardly anything went wrong with it other than a transmission, but I got it at 280,000kms and junked it 3 months ago at nearly 400,000kms. It was supposedly a "lemon" in most books you get. But, I couldn't be happier - I only paid $3500 for it and the crusher gave me $600 for the scrap metal value.

The newest one I've had for 14 months and it's been mostly trouble free. Got it at 105,000. It now has 120,000. It supposedly has a trouble-prone transmission, but I service it each year and so far no problems. I paid $7200 for it.

The brand matters less than how it is taken care of by you, or if it's used, by the previous owner.
