Three commercial fishermen jumped the shark when an 8-foot-long, 375-pound mako shark jumped into their boat Monday, the Associated Press reports.
Jason Kresse of Freeport, Texas, and two crewmembers had been fishing for red snapper about 50 miles into the Gulf of Mexico. As they were dumping fish guts about 3:45 a.m. Monday they heard two big splashes in the distance.
"All of a sudden something hit the side of the boat," Kresse, 29, said today. "He ends up landing on the back of the boat."
Kresse contacted federal fisheries officials, because the crew didn't have a permit to catch sharks. But he's in no regulatory trouble because the shark's death was an accident, a spokesman with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department said.
The shark, which damaged the boat, died after several hours. It is on display at a seafood business in Freeport. Kresse plans to have it mounted.
