STAMFORD -- A Hanover Street man told police a man he was drinking with in his apartment early Sunday stabbed him twice in the head because he didn't like the music the victim was playing, police said.
A short time later police found the suspect lying face down on his porch with a bloody box cutter next to him, Sgt. Richard Barbagallo said.
Martin Valey-Cruz, 24, of 23 Lafayette St., Stamford, was charged with first-degree assault, resisting arrest and carrying a dangerous weapon. He was held in lieu of $50,000 and arraigned at state Superior Court in Stamford Monday.
Barbagallo said police were called to 21 Hanover St. at 2 a.m. Sunday by the 28-year-old stabbing victim, who told emergency dispatchers he had been stabbed in the head.
When police got to the home, they found blood all over the stairwell to the second-floor apartment as well as in the kitchen and bedroom. A large amount of blood was also found in a drawer holding the kitchen knives, police said.
The man told police Valey-Cruz was an acquaintance he had been playing soccer with earlier in the evening at Cummings Beach.
He, Valey-Cruz and a mutual friend returned to Hanover Street where they drank and listened to music, Barbagallo said.
Sometime before the stabbing, the mutual friend left the apartment leaving only the two and an increasingly violent Valey-Cruz, police said.
Valey-Cruz took issue with the music his host was playing, the victim told police, and leaned over the kitchen table and told the man he had killed people before and he wasn't afraid to do it again, Barbagallo said.
Valey-Cruz lunged over the table and stabbed the man twice in the head, Barbagallo said.
The victim was taken to Stamford Hospital, where he was given several stitches to close a wound on his left forehead and a few staples to close the second stab wound on the back of his head, Barbagallo said.
After police determined where their suspect lived, they went to nearby Lafayette Street, where they found Valey-Cruz on his front porch laying on his stomach. Barbagallo said.
Next to him on the porch was a box cutter with a bloody handle, Barbagallo said.
