A husband is accused of enslaving his wife for 10 years, chaining her up and beating her in a brutal catalogue of abuse.
Peter Lizon, of Leroy, West Virginia, is charged with malicious wounding after his wife allegedly told a woman staying at the same crisis centre about her violent ordeal.
The 'gaunt and filthy' victim had scar tissue on her hands and ankles, which police believe is from chains tearing into her flesh.
Her husband had kept her tied up with metal padlocks and chains for around 10 years, she is said to have told the horrified woman.
Lizon called his wife his 'slave' and whenever he entered the room she had to kneel down before him, the woman informed the authorities.
The couple, who are originally from what was then Czechoslovakia, have a one-year-old child, who Lizon delivered while his wife was bound in chains, she said.
The concerned woman tried to tend to the victim's wounds and noticed severe burns on the victim's breasts and back, which were allegedly from her husband using a hot frying pan to burn her.
She also told the woman of a previous pregnancy during which her husband hit her in the stomach and caused a miscarriage. They then buried the 'fully developed' baby on their farm, she added.
Lizon's wife feet were 'mutilated and swollen' and one was missing a considerable amount of skin, allegedly because her husband had smashed her foot with a bucket or scoop attachment of a farm tractor.
The woman also told investigators that the victim's fingers looked crooked, and that Lizon's wife had told her her husband had broken her fingers.
After investigators finished the interview with the woman, they were able to obtain a warrant to gain more information from the shelter in which the women had stayed.
According to the criminal complaint, 45 photos were turned over to investigators showing the injuries that had been described to them.
Lizon's wife had apparently managed to escape when, on July 2, he took his wife and their child to return a roto-tiller attachment he had rented from a local store.
While he was in the shop, Lizon's wife walked away from the truck and hid in a Zumba dance facility. Lizon left with their child and his wife got a lift to the shelter.
Investigators were then able to obtain a search warrant for the couple's home, from which they confiscated a clothing iron from a bathroom cabinet.
Lizon is being held in the South Central Regional Jail in lieu of $300,000 bail.
Jackson County Deputy Sheriff Tony Boggs said: 'This is a case that is tenfold of what our average domestic is and maybe more than that. It comes down to what appears to be slavery and torture.'
Lizon may face further charges as the investigation unfolds.
Shawn Bayliss, Lizon’s attorney, said the miscarriage was the result of an ATV accident.
He claims the source who told the police everything has a 'feeble mind,' and the allegations against his client are false.
Mr Bayliss also said that the alleged victim is standing by her husband.
Deputy Sheriff Boggs said: 'It's amazing what one human being can do to another, and that should not ever happen or be allowed to happen.'
