I know we have a sports section...I thought we could take a more intimate approach to the upcoming Olympics in England.

Minz, beowulf, Leefro, Lambchop, Redred, Goofy (Englander by proxy), doenutts and all of the other British forum members...we'll be counting on you to give us behind the scenes updates and stories of interest

See you on July 27th :)

As GF can attest to, it was fun being in the middle of the carnival-like atmosphere when the Olympics were in Vancouver. Birks (fancy jewelry store) had 2 Astronauts (Stafford and Cernan from Apollo 10) there to introduce a new watch. It was incredibly cool to hear them recount their flight to the moon.

And, there were bands playing and many people high-fiving you just for no reason. My most fun was meeting some of the atheletes on the Skytrain (not all of them stayed in the village...some of them after their event wandered about) and talking to the families who'd come all this way to see their kid perform in the Olympics.

This one lady in particular showed me her camcorder footage of her son prepping and then the event, which was very cool to see.

i can think of a zillion ways the money could have been spent and it would have had more value

in these days of a double dip recession, massive unemployment, hospitals and schools suffering due to budget cuts, police at there lowest staffing levels in living memory, military personel being made redundant (dispite being called upon to police the games cos the useless twats who who took a huge contract to do so cant), rising crime and povety, old and disabled suffering due to cut backs, whilst being told we are morally corrupt for paying cash by a cunt of a politician who has a very short memory as it was only last year all his fellows were caught with thier snouts in the trough, i honestly think the money would have been better spent on creating permanant jobs to get us out of the shit we are in and helping those who need it

'Hottest female Olympian' doesn't expect to medal in javelin in London

LONDON – Paraguayan javelin thrower Leryn Franco has admitted she has far more chance of retaining her title as “hottest female Olympian” than she does of leaving London with a medal.

Franco was Yahoo's second-most searched Olympian, trailing only Michael Phelps, at the 2008 Beijing Games and was voted the most attractive competitor by several men's magazines. She managed just a 51st place finish in Beijing. Despite improving her performances over the last four years, she's still not expected to finish in the top 20.

"My situation is different from most of the other javelin throwers," Franco said. "I am not just an athlete. I have to be honest, my career is really in the media.

"If people open a magazine, they can see me there. Modeling and fashion is my job, too. It takes up much of my time and enables me to make money. It is flattering to me that people find me good-looking and enjoy seeing me wearing good fashion items."

Franco participated in Friday's Opening Ceremony and will not compete until Aug. 7, the fifth day of track and field events. She threw a personal best of 55.65 meters at an event in Buenos Aires last year, but that mark is nearly 17 meters shy of the world record.

Franco gained some extra attention in the United States last year when she was featured in Sports Illustrated's swimsuit edition and has a lucrative endorsement contract with Nike. In 2006, she finished second in a national beauty contest, Miss Universo Paraguay. She briefly dated world No.2 tennis player Novak Djokovic, but the pair split when their respective work and travel schedules made a relationship impossible.

"I am not expecting a medal," Franco said. "The competition is very strong and there are athletes who are stronger than me. But I treat it seriously and I want to do my personal best. For me the best reward is just to be here. Getting to the Olympics is like a medal for me."

Abby Wambach had a memorable day in Glasgow, Scotland on Saturday for multiple reasons. Not only did Wambach become the leading goal-scorer at the Olympics in US women's national team history, but she also ended up punched in the eye after tangling with one of her opponents.

During the 39th minute of the US's 3-0 win over Colombia, Wambach tangled with Lady Andrade and ended up punched in the eye. It's difficult to tell exactly what happened, but the two made contact after seemingly fighting for position. Lady Andrade's hand ended up smacking Wambach in the eye either intentionally or incidentally, and Wambach went down immediately.

The 32-year-old forward, whose eye was swollen after the game, described the incident as a sucker punch.

"I'm running toward the goal to get position, and I got sucker-punched," said Wambach, according to The Associated Press. "It's clear. We have it on film, so it's up to the Olympic committee and FIFA to decide what to do."

Lady Andrade had a different take on the incident.

"Nothing happened," she said through an interpreter. "It was just a normal part of the game. We were both running, she ran across me and we collided. I had my hands in the air. It was an accident."

While Wambach wants Andrade disciplined for the punch, Andrade says the US got away with a lot.

"I think they should be, too, because they're the United States. The whistle always goes in their favor. They were hitting us and hitting us, but there was never a whistle."

The two can quibble over what happened, but what really matters is the outcome and that went to the US. Wambach can also claim scoreboard after scoring in the 74th minute to make it 2-0. The goal also gave her the US Olympics record. She'll have much more to worry about going forward, including settling the beef between Hope Solo and Brandi Chastain.

Wambach can also claim scoreboard after scoring in the 74th minute to i make it 2-0. The goal also gave her the US Olympics record. She'll have much more to worry about going forward, including settling the beef between Hope Solo and Brandi Chastain.
