A longtime Greeley Spanish teacher is behind bars today after an anonymous online tip to Greeley police on Friday revealed she sexually assaulted a student two years ago.

Rhonda Eisenberg, 44, was booked into Weld County Jail Tuesday afternoon, after police say she admitted to having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student while he lived with her in 2010. Police said she admitted to having a child from the relationship.

“Several months before he graduated, she gave birth to a Hispanic baby and coworkers and family suspected she had a relationship with the victim, who was a minor in her care,” said Lt. Carl Alm, spokesman for the Greeley Police Department. “The tip also stated the person was concerned because she continued to work with teenage boys.”

She was booked on suspicion of two counts of sexual assault on a child, one involving a pattern of abuse, and the other involving being in a position of trust. Both charges are punishable by four to 12 years in prison upon a conviction followed by five years of parole. Bond information was not available as of Tuesday night.

Eisenberg taught Spanish at Northridge High School since 2000, and also taught Spanish in the Greeley-Evans School District 6 online high school, Engage Online Academy. From 1991 to 2000, she taught Spanish at Heath Middle School.

The alleged victim is now 19, and police will not name him because he was a juvenile at the time of the alleged assaults, which were alleged between June 2010 and September 2010.

“She admitted to sexual intercourse with the victim multiple times before he moved out in September 2010,” Alm said. “The victim is the father of her baby.”

Eisenberg had guardianship over the boy, whose parents lived in Mexico at the time, Alm said. She is now on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, reported Roger Fiedler, spokesman for the school district.

Alm said the police affidavit in the case stated the boy “offered assistance” to Eisenberg as the father of the child. He remains in the United States.

Fiedler said Eisenberg was placed on leave immediately upon learning of the arrest Tuesday. Officials will soon send out notifications to parents and staff of the arrest, urging them to call Greeley police if they have any continued concerns.
