I signed up for this yesterday. ($79 per year)
I order most of my IT equipment from Amazon anyway, so the free 2 day shipping made sense. But, they also let you stream their movie catalog and get one free kindle book a month.

Im loving amazon more everyday. :wavey:

real world example - I want to watch Avatar so I start watching. Can I pause it or stop it and come back to it another time?

I'm going to check into it. I buy (and sell) a lot on Amazon. You can find almost anything there at good prices.

The Roku doesn't store movies, it only streams them. It links in with your Amazon account so you can stream the Amazon prime stuff, has a Pandora interface, you can rent movies and a couple other features that are cool. You can even play motion controlled games on the newest one.

It's also nice because you can take the Roku to a friends house, jump on their WiFi, and you can watch all your movies/free streaming stuff there. The box is like 3" x 3" so it's really small and portable.

I promise the Roku is worth every penny. Here is the one I have. You'll thank me later.

then what do subscriptions cost?

Acid Trip

There is no subscription.

He'd get all the Amazon Prime stuff free (some movies, TV shows, etc) since he signed up for that. He can use the free Pandora or sign in with a paid account. He can browse all the movies for rent/sale for free.

New release SD movies cost $3.99 to rent. New release HD movies cost $4.99 to rent.

We use it mainly to rent movies without having to leave the house. The prices are $2-3 cheaper per movie than via cable companies or AT&T.

But he paid $79 for AP, so there is a fee. And Hulu Plus isn't free. And the movies aren't free. So you still have to subscribe to services or pay for movies, right? I mean I can't pay $78 for the box and use it without incurring additional costs.

You'd have to pay for every 'premium' service you would want access to....$8/month for Hulu Plus...$9/month (or there abouts) for Netflix....$79/year for Amazon....etc

Yeah the only thing "free" would be the amazon stuff, and even then you dont get everything for free. But, the box is a nice little device that attaches to all those other services. I think it also allows you to stream content off your PC.

That's the point of it. It's a gateway to all the services you already pay for. If you pay for Amazon, Hulu, Pandora, etc you can access them all without a PC and on any TV you want. All you need is the internet and you're ready to go.
