Apparently moving to Europe completely erased any trace of sensitivity in Madonna, because the 50-year-old singer went onstage at a concert in Scotland over the weekend waving revolvers and assault rifles in the wake of Friday's shootings in Colorado, despite being asked nicely by the local cops not to do so.
At Madge's first show in Scotland ever, in Edinburgh, she joked the concert may be "cut off" because she was going to flout laws against waving dummy weapons put in place after the Dunblane massacre, a 1996 bloodbath in which a 43-year-old man walked into a primary school and killed 16 children and one adult before killing himself. In the concert, she points guns at the crowd and plays machine gun sound effects while digital blood splatters all over a giant screen onstage. Never mind this all happened Saturday, not even two days after the events in Aurora.
Police won't be charging her with any crime, the U.K.'s Daily Record noted Monday, but you don't hear the singer's people not complaining about the bad press. "Madonna would rather cancel her show than censor her art," a member of her tour reportedly told the Huffington Post. "Her entire career, she has fought against people telling her what she can and cannot do. She’s not about to start listening to them now." Her European tour has been featuring other delights like displaying swastikas, ripping on Lady Gaga and flashing her 50-year-old boob.
Perhaps the real damage, however, is that so few people actually bought seats to the show, she had to give away thousands of tickets. And you thought her writhing around in a too-small leotard for the Hung Up video was bad. It'll be interesting to see if she censors her art when she goes to Denver on October 18.
