Two toddlers died from apparent heat stroke last week after they were left trapped inside a hot car for over an hour by their young mom.

Samantha Harper of Smyrna, Tenn. allegedly admitted to police that she put her two children, Daniel Marise, 3, and Savannah Marise, 2, in the car on Aug. 2 and then fell asleep inside her home, The Tennessean reported.

When she woke up an hour later, the 25-year-old said she found her children dead in the red four-door sitting in her driveway and called 911.

It is unclear why Harper had put her children in the broiling vehicle in the first place.

"It doesn't take a lot of time before it can become a deadly situation for someone trapped inside a car," Smyrna Police Sgt. Bobby Gibson told News Channel 5.

Authorities arrived at the scene to find the two children lying next to the vehicle.

Gibson told The Tennessean that someone has pulled the children out of the car before the police arrived. He did not give the name of the individual, citing an ongoing investigation.

Bobby Boyd, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Nashville, said that the high temperature in Smyrna on Aug. 2 was 99 degrees.

But Gibson says that it was much hotter than 99 degrees inside the car.

“You put someone in a car with the windows rolled up, with no ventilation, it can increase the temperature easy 30 to 40 degrees inside the vehicle,” Gibson told News Channel 5.

Harper has been charged with two counts of especially aggravated child abuse and may face further charges.

Authorities said that the children's father was not home at the time of the incident, though his whereabouts remain unclear.

Police later searched Harper's home, finding it in a "deplorable" condition. The house will be condemned, according to News Channel 5.

Harper's aunt, Estella Ship, maintains that her niece was a good mother.

"I just know her and I know her mother, and she wouldn't do that, she wanted babies ever since she was a baby," Ship told the local news outlet.

LaVergne police, however, filed a child neglect report against Harper on Sept. 29, 2011. The incident was later referred to the Department of Children's services.

Harper is currently being held in the Rutherford County Jail on $200,000 bail.

She is set to appear in court on Aug. 9.

Harper is not the first parent to leave her children in locked car in the sweltering heat this summer.

Kenneth Robinson was charged with child abuse in June after he left his toddler son in a car for several hours.

Jessica Christian was arrested in Texas in May for leaving her 2-year-old in a hot car while she downed four margaritas in a half an hour at a nearby restaurant.

The children in both cases survived.
