LARKSPUR - Jon Dukeman is convinced someone in Douglas County has been using his old, blind dog for target practice.

"It's pretty sick," Dukeman told 9News from the front porch of his Larkspur home.

Jack currently has 11 pellets embedded deep within his body. The black Labrador is a decade old and hasn't been able to see clearly for years.

On Tuesday, veterinarians told Dukeman they can't easily remove the small pellets that appeared in an x-ray.

Since the appointment, Dukeman has to change the dog's dressing three times a day.

"He's been a great dog," he said.

Sgt. Ron Hanavan told 9News on Tuesday that his office currently has no suspect, but is continuing to treat the case very seriously.

"This is not OK," he said. "This is not acceptable."

Dukeman first took his dog to the vet last month where a doctor first noticed a wound from an apparent pellet gun strike. He said his dog started acting strangely again over the past weekend.

When the vet decided to take a closer look, they were stunned.

"This was no drive-by, pot shot with a gun," Dukeman said. "Somebody set up and used my dog for target practice."

It's possible the dog was hit a month ago, and that veterinarians have only been able to identify the problem now.

Dukeman calls his dog "defenseless" based upon the fact that he lost his eyesight years ago.

They need to find the psychopath who did it and put them away before they start target practicing on children, old people, or somebody else helpless.
