The main reason why I'm not posting much lately: Bulletstorm on PS3.

I played Call of Duty Black Ops on my old pc.I had to turn down a lot of the settings and it seemed average at best.I really hated all the drama and cutscenes in between actual run 'n gun time.
Just fired it up on the new pc and oh Lordy, what a different game

I got plugged standing in a courtyard, because I stopped and was looking around admiring the lovely graphics  durrrhhh

Hal-9000
05-11-2011, 01:25 AM
oh dude I'm glad you're here...I played Black Ops on the old pc and was underwhelmed

This is one of those times when I feel like a fanboy using the new hardware to run games, totally different experience.

I got this killer Dell monitor too which adds so much to the graphics...remember the early Vietnam level where you fight all those dudes in the valley
coming up the hill? (Khe Sahn I think) Last night I swear there were 70 enemies on the screen, plus my guys, plus jets dropping napalm and bombs, plus high pitched screams....it was awesome.

Godfather
05-11-2011, 01:28 AM
Yeah that defense of Khe Sahn mission is ridiculous  I remember just standing in the bunker and firing and firing and firing and the waves kept coming  I felt shell-shocked by the end of that mission

Must look great on the new PC. I'm surprised the new monitor added so much; but you do your homework on hardware so that's awesome. I recently played Bad Company 2 on PC and the graphics were more impressive than on Xbox, I hate to admit.

I understand Battlefield 3 is being tailored towards PC pretty hard so I might have to switch over for that one

Hal-9000
05-11-2011, 01:50 AM
The Dell monitor has an 8 second response time...geeks say that 5ms is too slow and 2ms is ideal for gaming...
then I read and saw vids with guys who had my monitor and they play all sorts of FPS and Need For Speed  no problemo...

It's kinda dry and technical but the Dell has an IPS panel inside compared to the typical TN panel in new monitors these days.

It translates to things like sunsets, dark levels, smoke, fire and effects...looking great and 10x better. And Black Ops is all about effects and pixel shading

I just downloaded and installed Lord of the Rings Online since it switched to F2P (free to play). It's a pretty incredible game considering it's free. I've heard that leveling past the 20's is next to impossible without coughing up money for the paid content but I can't say for sure since I'm not there.

Anyone who likes MMORPGs should check it out. I'm on Riddlemark.

If you're into shooters and sports, you may not care for it.

It's kinda like Lord of the Rings, medieval times....you create a guy, and literally start walking around. There's no real linear quest to follow and everyone you meet has something to say or something for you to do.

The AI is cool in the way where when you advance your character or commit certain acts, their attitude towards you when talking changes.I recently got something like 83% strength, so as I walk by people in a city the comments are - "Oh, look at the muscles on YOU"

The land is 16 square miles to scale, so if you start walking somewhere the weather and time of day changes. It's pretty cool for submersion into the game..

Medal of Honor

The good was that it was one of the cleanest, nicest to control/play FPS I've come across. The way you can double tap switch weapons to pull out a pistol instead of your second long-gun is extremely cool. Whip it out, take a few shots, go back to reloading, toss a few grenades. Makes me feel like that part of Blackhawk down where the two DELTA snipers go and try to protect Mike Durant. The game lets you fully lie-down, and there is a peak/lean feature that it sweet in a tough spot.

The lighting and graphics were very strong as well. Loved that. Especially dawn/dusk missions. Beautiful. And controlling the helicopter and AC-130 was a lot of fun.

The bad was that it took me two sit-downs (three hours MAX) to beat the campaign. I'm not one who feels it should take days... but 5-8 hours is more that I expect from a campaign. And the storyline wasn't there. Just some SEALs and Rangers trying to kill a bunch of bad guys on a mountain with a very thin plot about an armchair general in Washington fucking things up.

Another problem was there were some mission glitches. There was once spot I had to turn off the Xbox and restart the mission, as-per a forum recommendation because a machine gun nest WOULD NOT take cove as I was supposed to pin it so the team could move up. That pissed me off and EA has apparently ignored it *shrug*

The online isn't worth playing if you own CoD of Bad Company 2 either.

If it wasn't free I would have been pissed at myself for spending $40-50

Yeah but some like the old Call of Duty 2 have so much atmosphere and damned fun you can play them again  I may have played that one offline probably 5 times thru by now.
It's rare that I'll play a FPS twice...and usually know about halfway thru the first time if I'm going to play again.

I'm fine with that if the online is playable for 20-40 hours like cod or battlefield. Those games i enjoy for months. That's why I buy them. I still expect a good single player to last me 6 hours because expecting 12 or 15 with games these detailed is asking too much IMO

But when a game has both unimaginative online and super short campaigns it feels like a rip off

I've played Oblivion about 4 times now...I stop playing at various stages

I always start as a good archer/fighter and do the main quest, shut down the big Oblivion Gate after getting all of the Holy Crusader armor/relics.
Then I complete all of the fighter's guild quests.Usually have about 30000-40000 gold at this point and 2 places to live.

then it seems I run of things to do as a good guy  so I have to join the thieve's guild and become a badass...

A fun little game called Just Cause 2

It's perhaps the coolest 3rd person shooter/adventure game I've played. You get to use a grappling hook at will and you can tie together things using it.You also get a mini parachute that can be deployed anytime.
I just finished standing on a car roof shooting at bad guys in a high speed chase and found out that you can jump from car to car and eventually jack the car a la Grand Theft Auto. It's hilarious

Battlefield 3 is going to destroy the CoD domination of the FPS market I think.

What if you go into properties and change the compatibility to a previous version of Windows? That's what it's there for!

Hal-9000
09-22-2011, 01:43 AM
No man if you read about certain games, guys try everything short of writing code to get them to work.Compatibility is the first thing to try...

Bethesda Softworks makes both Oblivion and Fallout 3 (they look and act similar too) Oblivion is the older game yet I can get it to run on Windows 7...it will crash the odd time to the desktop, nothing serious tho.
Apparently Fallout 3 has all sorts of dll errors and black screens and works for 5 minutes only then dumps...and the textures are wrong in the game. You don't want to have to suffer through hours of that

Godfather
09-22-2011, 03:26 AM
Interesting... that's a shame.

The compatibility settings windows offers should address that issues. I know I had some problems getting an old Command and Conquer game to go, had to download a new executable file and change some administrative settings. Not surprising some games are even more trouble.

Bummer... maybe Microsoft will work on that further down the road. So many good games and programs that shouldn't be left behind.

No, when I use the B-word I was meaning I would actually make the trek down to the store, search the shelves and purchase the DVD at the till :|

Sometimes it's easier to do that with a new game rather than try to mod and hack the crap out of it, only to have it crash or experience other problems.I had one game that wouldn't save properly (part of the copy protection) ,
so either you played it all in one sitting  or you had to keep playing the same level over and over and over again....I gave up and uninstalled it.

Wandering around mods on New Vegas and laughing my back off.

Failing that wandered into 'Dead island'

The first 15-20% playable is relatively predictable zombie hack and slash first person, i wandered through it because i was kind of bored and hadnt bought anything new since Christmas when my fallout obsession kicked in.

Once you get to 20% completion and the full strength bad guys get going and your playing around with vehicles its kind of a cool game and worth playing, you just have to get through the boring training wheels levels first.

RAGE - PC

Plagued with technical issues, Numerous visual bugs, Inconsistent textures ....

I guess in Rage you drive around quite a bit and do some shooting...good weapons and fun according to the review.

The good things about games that have bugs when released can be fixed through updates

Unlike GT 5 which is just wank even after about 3 gigs of updates

this is pretty typical for the past few Bethesda games....pc of course

"The early hours of Rage's PC launch were plagued with problems, and many still linger as of this writing. Nvidia cards are still prone to screen tearing, while AMD cards see issues with freezing and wonky character animations."

I got Fallout NewVegas to run smooth right up until the end. Then I started getting mysterious crashes to the desktop midgame.Kinda crappy if you haven't saved in a while and have just put 2 hours in :(

I read one review of Skyrim and I'll be picking it up  I loved Oblivion and it's supposed to similar with some great improvements. I may wait a week or so to enable them to get the patch out

Was thinking of MW3, as my pc store has some for 49 bucks which is a steal.

Yup  should at least take a patch or two to get it more stable (With games as huge as it is...bound to happen ) but from what I heard, no major crashing happening because of it.

This blacksmith asked me to forge various items and I became a little annoyed towards the end so I killed one of his chickens (middle right in image ) and now he won't stop following me around and attacking me. I can't even kill him; he just falls to the ground, recovers and bounces back into action. Might restart from the beginning and play the game without messing with any livestock. :-k

Another life lesson learned...don't mess with someone else's chicken! (and what if you die? I'm guessing that he should not bother you after you respawn)

Saw a video online and the guy playing did the exact same thing (killed a chicken in Whiterun, people attacked him and he eventually landed in jail...they didn't bother him after he served his time behind bars)

fuck me that was the best thing about Oblivion. You installed it plus any downloadable content you had offline and the damn game ran...like it should.
Even the Windows 7 compatibility page said that Oblivion wouldn't run on 64bit WIN7...it ran with nary a glitch

Now I'm gonna install Skyrim through Steam and the damn game launcher won't work without me standing on my left leg, one arm out the window and right nut hanging out :|

Can you not get on a torrent and bypass it ?

Hal-9000
11-15-2011, 04:22 AM
I wouldn't get anything on a torrent, that's internet suicide

I can get games if they're uploaded on links, but each month it gets harder to bypass the copy protection so I can end up wasting let's say 10 gigs in bandwidth, try the hacked install, only to have it not work and my pc corrupted with 10 gigs worth of dogy install files and a screwed up registry.I know you don't install many pc games Lee, but you can fook over the system with a dodgy install.

That's why Fallout New Vegas pissed me off.Bought the game and still struggled with making the bugger work

That is the BIG advantage with consoles here...no steam :D (BTW I DO have Oblivion with steam on my laptop...works great...laggy but it is most likely my graphic card that is the problem here)

Got home, threw in DVD # 1 for Modern Warfare 3 and Steam started up :x

By Hercules' testes is NOTHING SACRED??!!!!! :x :x Even my beloved Call of Duty Franchise has sold out...

At least it started installing from the discs and not downloading the install files through Steam like Fallout New Vegas did  There are some benefits I guess....Steam does auto updates for the game in the background so you don't have to worry about finding Patch 1.75328..

I haven't booted the game yet :face:.....looks to have some cool options for solo and online play.I'm a geek and admit it.One of my fave parts about a new game is tweaking the settings to make it run like butter.Unfortunately the COD games usually don't have an ingame screenshot utility. If I can dump out of it to Windows and get back, I'll post some screens
