The first mile-high skyscraper could be a reality by 2025. That's according to a Chicago architect in an interview with Bloomberg.

The tallest building in the world right now is the the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. It has 160 floors and stands at more than 2,700-feet tall.

A mile high mega-structure would almost double that in size. In fact, the Burj Khalifa is expected to fall into second place by 2018, anyway, when a skyscraper in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia is built.

Chicago architect Timothy Johnson tells Bloomberg the technology to build a mile-high structure already exists. He says he had discussions about building a tower a mile-and-a-half high four-years ago. But Johnson says the project was put on hold because of the economic downturn.

mabye so, but what's the point? I can't imagine that there'S anywhere where the cost of property is so high that it makes sense to build one gynormous scyscraper instead of several regular one.

Its a penis contest using buildings.

Imagine the damage you could cause spitting a loogey off of the roof of a mile-high skyscraper.

/nerd on

Except the terminal velocity of spit isn't high enough to do any damage. You could spit from low Earth orbit and it wouldn't hurt at all.

not when you count wind resistance :D

I was gonna say, by 2025??? not unless quite a few people & countries rediscover fiscal conservatism.

Maybe it'll be a low-income housing project. Lot of stairwells to tag!

pretty long for sure. I bet the folks on the upper floor will simply parachute down if they wanna take the pooch for a walk

Hal, when was the last time you got a broken bone or bruise from rain?

Also, the ride to the top wouldn't be terrible if they just had one shaft. A building that height might have a change over floor though for ease and to keep the speed. I work in a tower thats over 1100 ft tall and from top to bottom takes 45 seconds, and that's after they slowed the elevators down after people complained they went too fast.
