Who were/are you cheering for this year? I really like Rory and some of the other young guys

It's time for new blood... Tiger showed some glimmers of life the other day but it's all about the new guys for me now. Seems like a lot of people who are following golf this year agree. Time for fresh faces, and they're a lot of fun to cheer for!

I like watching this Jason Day kid who shot a 64 on day two and he's my age

Its a real shame about McIlroy, would of been fantastic for him to of won it at such a young age and who knows what he would of accomplished down the line.. I fear the heartbreak of this at the Masters and what he did at St Andrews last year may of turned him into another Monty

Godfather

Yeah I was really sad for him :( I wanted him or Tig to win it.

Rory will bounce back... he handled himself really well after the round talking to the press. He knows he has a lot of wins ahead of him

Jason Day was another impressive one. That 64 he shot on the 2nd round was incredible!!!

McIlory will have a few Major titles before he retires and if Day doesn't win a Major in the next 3 years I'll be surprised.

The most hazardous water hazard ever: a shark
By Jay Busbee - Yahoo! Golf Writer

Think golf's too boring a game? Then get down to Australia, slick, and play the Carbrook Golf Club in Queensland. The water hazard there features up to 30 real live sharks. Behold:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7ARrPk8zhQ

We're gonna need a bigger cart.

Yeah, that's a mean-looking shark and all, but I'd probably chance it if I put one of my Pro-V1s in there. Those things ain't cheap, you know.

The sharks were thought to be a myth for many years, but as you can see, that's no myth. Club officials speculate that the bull sharks, some of which are estimated at up to 10 feet long, washed into the lake during a flood in the early 1990s.

The sharks are in a lake that borders the holes, so it's not like your ball has to jump a shark, to coin a phrase. Still, the club has embraced its fearsome guests, touting the sharks' presence and hosting a monthly "Shark Lake Challenge." The club's general manager also feeds the sharks chicken, which is good as long as they don't get a taste for golfer flesh.

So for those of you thinking that the worst thing possible on a golf course happened to Rory McIlroy on Sunday, guess again. He could've been eaten.

No point in aggravating an injury even further to come back early even if it is the US Open. Guy should just help organize his $50 million bachelor pad complete with 9-holes getting finished and come back to golf when he's more healthy and less likely to shoot a 42 on the front 9, swear his face off and then drop out...

It's great for the game of golf if he can keep it up. It's obvious Tiger won't be around that much longer (I think it's safe to say that Jack's Major Title record is safe for now) and golf needs someone to replace him.

Rory seems to have an affinity with Tiger too  Disturbing him during his practice rutine for while the other golfers watched from afar, calling him out on TV twice, saying his 'aura' is gone.

And Rory is actually friendly and engaging from what I have read. Yep. Think golf might have a new superstar.

At least I hope so. I'm all for underdog stories, but when randoms/nobodies/lesser-knowns win the Majors it's not good for ratings and the PGA in a strange way.

I think you're likely to be right... but Jack's last four that Tiger still needs to tie came for him between the ages 38-46. Tiger is only 35 now. If he gets strong in his mind and body there's a chance.

On the other hand... he has given guys like Rory and Day a lot of room to be confident. The field is pretty strong right now.

Hopefully he takes the rest of the year off, gets great coaching, heals up and comes back strong. I'd love a Rory-Tiger rivalry to last a few years

Tiger Woods to Make 'Special Announcement' Monday
NewsCore

LOS ANGELES – Fourteen-time major champion Tiger Woods is set to make a "special announcement" Monday on the Golf Channel, but details on what he would be addressing were a mystery.

The 35-year-old announced last week that he was pulling out of this week's British Open as he continues to recover from knee and Achilles injuries, and the unknown nature of this latest address sparked speculation across the web that he would be taking an extended break from the game.

There was even some suggestion that he may retire, although Woods only said last week, "I think my best years are still ahead of me and I'm very confident and optimistic about the future."

Woods has been out of action since the middle of May after pulling out of the Players Championship with a mild medial collateral ligament sprain to his left knee and a mild strain to his left Achilles tendon, suffered while hitting a shot from under a tree at the Masters in April.

The three-time British Open champion said last week that he would be more careful and take his time in coming back this year so as to fully get over his injuries.

Woods has not won a major since the 2008 U.S. Open and remains winless overall since late 2009, shortly before it emerged that he had multiple affairs, ultimately ending his marriage with Swedish model Elin Nordegren.

The announcement will take place Monday at 11:00am ET, when he will sit down with the Golf Channel's Kelly Tilghman.

Well, since I am bored at work and don't feel like doing anything, let me regale you with my experience at the US Women's Open this past weekend. :)

It was an awesome time, to say the least. Even with the crowds, we were able to follow around all the big names a few times and we got to see just about everyone play. The first day we spent mostly wandering the course and not following anyone in particular, mostly due to the fact that weather screwed up the whole tournament this weekend and instead of seeing the 3rd round on Saturday, we saw the completion of the 2nd round. So on that day, not everyone was on the course. But we did get to see Michelle Wie, Natalie Gulbis, Christie Kerr, Ai and Mika Miyazato, Amy Anderson (one of the amateurs that qualified for the Open), Morgan Pressel, Karrie Webb, Angela Stanford and Juli Inkster as well as a bunch of the lesser known golfers. We went from watching them tee off to hanging out at some of the greens to watch their approach shots and their putting. Watching these golfers in person is waaaaaay more impressive than what you see on TV.

But then at about 4:30-ish on Saturday, right after the first 3 groups of the 3rd round went out to try and squeeze it in to get everything back on schedule, the weather moved in. It was a torrential downpour and the lightning was uber scary because it was so close. So they called a weather delay and eventually scrubbed the rest of the day because of weather.

They planned on resuming the rest of the 3rd round on Sunday with 6:45 tee times to try and get the 3rd and 4th rounds all in on the same day. We got there a little after 7 and headed for the 1st tee to see the leaders take off. Finally yesterday we got to see Paula Creamer play and she's just amazing. The gallery following her went from huge to GINORMOUS almost instantly. After watching her tee off the first hole, we jumped ahead to 3 to see her putt. Then after following the leaders for a bit, we headed up to the 7th green and just camped out there for most of the day. It was a really tough par 4 and we saw a lot of missed putts, but we saw everyone come through that made the cut which was actually a lot more fun than following 1 or 2 groups around the course.

And then at about 3:30 the weather moved in AGAIN and caused a delay. We waited until 4:30 and they still hadn't updated as to whether they were gonna resume play, so we had to call it a day because it was a work day today and Colorado Springs is a 90 minute drive from Denver (although because of weather and traffic it too THREE FUCKING HOURS to get home yesterday :wha: ). Good thing we didn't wait because according to the LPGA website they didn't resume play until 6 last night and they still didn't get it all in.

But even with the weather problems, it was still an awesome time and I'm so glad I went. If you ever get a chance to go watch the pro play (men or women) and you are a fan of golf, I highly recommend it. And for those that think female golfers aren't as good as the men, you should actually watch them sometime because man, they made some impressive shots.

I really like watching LPGA. Those girls are very strong golfers, and yet their swings are so nice and slow. Perfect tempo, so you can really watch and learn much more so than the big guys on the PGA with their huge swings.

Teh One Who Knocks
07-13-2011, 02:23 PM
For sure! I think the women don't get nearly the respect they deserve compared to the men. Sure, the girls can't hit it 320 yards off the tee, but that's not the important part of the game. As the old saying goes, "drive for show, putt for dough".

But that's what makes the girls so much more impressive. Most of them are just tiny little things yet they can still crush the ball off the tee. We followed Ai Miyazato for a few holes and watched her driving. She can't be more than 5 foot nothing and she was crushing her drives in the 270 to 280 yard range.

Take the driving aspect away from the game (because the men are definitely longer off the tee because they are just naturally bigger and stronger) and I would put any of those girls up against the guys when it comes to approach shots and putting.

The freefall continues: Tiger Woods drops out of the world top 20
By Jay Busbee - Yahoo Sports

We all knew this day was coming, we just didn't think it was coming so soon. Tiger Woods has dropped out of the world top 20, a moment which we've all anticipated in the last few months, but one which retains major historical significance.

You know the story. Woods hasn't been close to a world-beating golfer since his scandal broke in November 2009. This season, he's played exactly nine holes of competitive golf since Augusta, an ill-fated excursion to The Players Championship in May. And now, he's only ranked No. 21 in the world.

Indeed, perhaps the only surprise surrounding Woods' place in the rankings was the fact that he remained in the top 10 for so long. But the Official World Golf Rankings tally scores based on a rolling two-year average, and since Woods had a successful 2009 -- before Thanksgiving, at least -- he was cruising on past successes.

Which is why he'll be hitting terminal velocity in the rankings before long. We're coming up on the two-year anniversary of a remarkable run in which he posted two wins and a second-place finish in three straight tournaments -- the Buick Classic, the Bridgestone and the PGA Championship -- and once those no longer count in his favor, he'll have only the September 2009 BMW Championship and the November 2009 Australian Masters counting in his favor.

The top of the rankings remain familiar: Luke Donald, Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer, Rory McIlroy and Steve Stricker. Phil Mickelson comes in at No. 6, and British Open winner Darren Clarke is No. 31. (Auburn also received votes, which seems a little strange.)

We don't need any more reminders of how far Woods has fallen. And although winning will solve many of his on-course ills, those days seem further away than ever before.

What an awesome day  I followed Rickie Fowler for quite a bit of it. He's a really cool young guy, nice to his fans, smiles, great golfer. Think he's one of my favorites now.

Moved around and got a change to see Daily, Schwartzel, Ogilvy, Donald and a bunch more.

And wow... what an amazing course Shaughnessy is. It costs around $75,000 to join and then $1000/month to be a member so needless to say I'll probably never play there  But I can see why it considered amongst the best modern courses in the world. Difficult as hell too.

Cool  I caught the end of it on tv......... cant even remember the winners name though  It went to play-off, he won then started crying during his interview :)

Tiger Woods enters PGA Championship
Associated Press

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. -- Tiger Woods has already missed two major championships this year. He doesn't plan on missing the last one.

Woods has formally entered the PGA Championship, to be played Aug. 11-14 at Atlanta Athletic Club. He has been out of golf for nearly three months so that injuries to his left leg can properly heal. He will make his return next week in the World Golf Championship event at Firestone.

PGA spokesman Julius Mason said Friday that Woods' agent, Mark Steinberg, told him Woods intends to play the PGA as long as everything goes well at Firestone and there are no complications to his left leg.

Woods has failed to win the last nine majors he has played, one short of matching his longest drought.

Love reveals his Ryder Cup picks
GolfWeek - Alex Miceli

NEW YORK - Captain Davis Love III went with experience for the U.S. Ryder Cup team, picking Jim Furyk, Dustin Johnson and Steve Stricker on Tuesday but adding Brandt Snedeker for his first cup team as a professional.

In an announcement at the NASDAQ market site in Times Square, Love picked three players – Furyk (7), Johnson (1) and Stricker (2) – who have competed in a total of 10 U.S. Ryder Cups against the Europeans. Furyk and Stricker have experienced victory and defeat, having played in the past two cups, a U.S. loss in Wales in 2010 and a victory at Valhalla in 2008.

Johnson experienced the wet conditions of Wales and a loss in his only Ryder Cup appearance. However, his performance during the past two weeks of the Tour's FedEx Cup playoffs, in which he tied for third at The Barclays and tied for fourth at the Deutsche Bank Championship, that seemed to sway Love in the big hitter’s direction.

The combined record of Furyk, Johnson and Stricker in Ryder Cup competition is 12-20-7.

Among them, the trio recorded two Tour victories in 2012 (Stricker at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions and Johnson at the FedEx St. Jude Classic) but also had some famous collapses, notably when Furyk took the 54-hole lead into the U.S. Open and WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and failed to finish it off.

Snedeker, 31, has never played on a Ryder or Presidents cup team and was not believed to be on the initial short list that included Rickie Fowler, Hunter Mahan, Furyk and Stricker.

Snedeker, who won early in the season at the Farmers Insurance Open, finished 13th in the final Ryder Cup points standings after missing the cut at the PGA Championship.

But Snedeker, who ranks first on Tour in the strokes gained-putting category, has had a strong run in the past three weeks – T-28 at the Wyndham Championship, second at The Barclays and sixth at last week’s Deutsche Bank – to win Love’s attention.

Snedeker, No. 18 in the Official World Golf Ranking, is the 10th-highest-ranked American.

The 39th Ryder Cup matches will be played Sept. 28-30 at Medinah (Ill.) Country Club’s No. 3 course near Chicago.

By DOUG FERGUSON (AP Golf Writer) | The Associated Press

Golf's governing bodies approved a rule Tuesday that outlaws the putting stroke used by four of the last six major champions, a move opposed by two major golf organizations that contend long putters are not hurting the game.

The Royal & Ancient Golf Club and U.S. Golf Association said Rule 14-1b will take effect in 2016.

''We recognize this has been a divisive issue, but after thorough consideration, we remain convinced that this is the right decision for golf,'' R&A chief executive Peter Dawson said.

The new rule does not ban the long putters, only the way they commonly are used. Golfers no longer will be able to anchor the club against their bodies to create the effect of a hinge. Masters champion Adam Scott used a long putter he pressed against his chest. British Open champion Ernie Els and U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson used a belly putter, as did Keegan Bradley in the 2011 PGA Championship.

''We strongly believe that this rule is for the betterment of the game,'' USGA President Glen Nager said. ''Rule 14-1b protects one of the important challenges in the game - the free swing of the entire club.''

The announcement followed six months of contentious debate, and it might not be over.

The next step is for the PGA Tour to follow the new rule or decide to establish its own condition of competition that would allow players to anchor the long putters. PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem said in February the USGA and R&A would be ''making a mistake'' to adopt the rule, though he also has stressed the importance of golf playing under one set of rules.

''I think it's really important that the PGA Tour - and all the professional tours - continue to follow one set of rules,'' USGA executive director Mike Davis said. ''We have gotten very positive feedback from the tours around the world saying that they like one set of rules, they like the R&A and USGA governing those. So if there was some type of schism, we don't think that would be good for golf.

''And we are doing what we think is right for the long-term benefit of the game for all golfers, and we just can't write them for one group of elite players.''

The tour said in a statement it would consult with its Player Advisory Council and policy board to determine ''whether various provisions of Rule 14-1b will be implemented in our competitions, and if so, examine the process for implementation.''

PGA of America President Ted Bishop, who had some of the sharpest comments over the last few months, also said his group would discuss the new rule - and confer with the PGA Tour - before deciding how to proceed.

''We are disappointed with this outcome,'' Bishop said. ''As we have said publicly and repeatedly during the comment period, we do not believe 14-1b is in the best interest of recreational golfers and we are concerned about the negative impact it may have on both the enjoyment and growth of the game.''

Some forms of anchoring have been around at least 40 years, and old photographs suggest it has been used even longer. It wasn't until after Bradley became the first major champion to use a belly putter that the USGA and R&A said it would take a new look at the putting style.

''It can never be too late to do the right thing,'' Nager said.

Those in favor of anchored putting argued that none of the top 20 players in the PGA Tour's most reliable putting statistic used a long putter, and if it was such an advantage, why wasn't everyone using it?

''Intentionally securing one end of the club against the body, and creating a point of physical attachment around which the club is swung, is a substantial departure from that traditional free swing,'' Nager said. ''Anchoring creates potential advantages, such as making the stroke simpler and more repeatable, restricting the movement and rotation of the hands, arms and clubface, creating a fixed pivot point, and creating extra support and stability that may diminish the effects of nerves and pressure.''

The governing bodies announced the proposed rule on Nov. 28, even though they had no data to show an advantage. What concerned them more was a spike in usage on the PGA Tour, more junior golfers using the long putters and comments from instructors that it was a better way to putt. There was concern the conventional putter would become obsolete over time.

The purpose of the new rule was simply to define what a putting stroke should be.

''The playing rules are not based on statistical studies,'' Nager said. ''They are based on judgments that define the game and its intended challenge. One of those challenges is to control the entire club, and anchoring alters that challenge.''

The topic was so sensitive that the USGA and R&A allowed for a 90-day comment period, an unprecedented move for the groups that set the rules of golf. The USGA said about 2,200 people offered feedback through its website, while the R&A said it had about 450 people from 17 countries go through its website.

Among those who spoke in favor of the ban were Tiger Woods, Brandt Snedeker and Steve Stricker.

''I've always felt that in golf you should have to swing the club, control your nerves and swing all 14 clubs, not just 13,'' Woods said Monday.

Tim Clark and Carl Pettersson have used the long putter as long as they have been on the PGA Tour. Scott switched to the broom-handle putter only in 2011, and he began contending in majors for the first time - tied for third in 2011 Masters, runner-up at the 2012 British Open, his first major victory in the Masters last month.

''It was inevitable that big tournaments would be won with this equipment because these are the best players in the world, and they practice thousands of hours,'' Scott said after winning the Masters. ''They are going to get good with whatever they are using.''

It was Clark's dignified speech to a players-only meeting - with Davis from the USGA in the room - that helped sway the tour's opinion to oppose the ban.

Davis and Dawson said their research indicated the opposition to the new rule was mainly in America. The European Tour and other tours around the world all backed the ban.

Players can still use the putter, but it would have to be held away from the body to allow free swing. Mark Newell, head of the USGA's rules committee, said the rule would be enforced like so many others in golf - players would have to call the penalty on themselves.

Even though the US lost, it was a fun weekend out there at the Solheim Cup. Worst part about the whole weekend (other than the Americans not being able to make a putt to save their lives) was the course itself. The course was absolutely beautiful, every fairway looked like it would be a green on any other course, but it was the most fan un-friendly course I have ever been to. The place was spread out over like a bazillion acres and some of the holes had only one way to get to them and they were waaaaaaaaaaay out there. On Saturday me and my buddy must have easily walked 6 or 7 miles not being familiar with the course. And then, the paths throughout the course didn't follow the fairways much at all and some of the greens had very tiny areas for spectators to be able to see anything. And most holes had something obstructing your sight line. You can tell this was a fully private course that wasn't designed for a tournament like this. Kinda surprised the LPGA awarded the Solheim Cup to them after seeing the place in person. And I looked it up, this course is so private that it's impossible to join without an invitation.

Other than that it was pretty good. We saw a fair amount of golf considering the way the course is laid out and I was lucky enough to be at the 17th green when Norqvist made her hole in one and I was at the 7th green when the controversy during Creamer's putt happened, so that was kinda cool. Just too bad the American played like shit. The Euros outplayed them in every facet of the game and certainly deserved to win. Lots of fun being able to attend the Solheim Cup though because I doubt any international tournament will be that close to me ever again in the foreseeable future.

Oh, and big props to Caroline Hedwall for going 5-0 during the Cup. She played 36 on Friday, 36 on Saturday, and then another 18 on Sunday. That course was absolutely brutal with lightning fast greens, it was blazing hot outside, and it was an up and down course. That's just an amazing feat that she pulled off.

I didn't think it could get any worse for Tom Watson regarding the Ryder Cup last week but it has. Way worse, even.

Bob Harig of ESPN had a tremendous report on Friday basically painting Watson as a detriment to the United States side on Saturday night before the Sunday singles matches.

"Four sources who witnessed the proceedings in the U.S. team room at the Gleneagles Hotel said Watson took no responsibility for any shortcomings, scoffed at a gift that the U.S. team members gave him, ridiculed several European team players and started the proceedings by denigrating the Americans' play that afternoon."
Yikes.

And somehow it gets worse from there.

"Watson started by saying, according to all of the sources: 'You stink at foursomes.'

After praising the rookie team of Patrick Reed and Jordan Spieth, Watson went through the Sunday singles pairings and ridiculed several members of the European side as he went through the matchups. Soon after, Watson was presented a gift by Furyk, a replica of the Ryder Cup trophy that was signed by every member of the team. Instead of thanking them, the sources said Watson said the gift meant nothing to him if the players didn't get the real Ryder Cup on Sunday and that he wanted to be holding it aloft on the green in victory.

Said one of the sources: 'That's almost verbatim. He said it basically means nothing to me.'"
The entire story is pretty wild as Harig had some deep sources on the US side and it does shed some light on why Phil Mickelson would do what he did on Sunday night.

Two of the PGA Tour's sartorial stalwarts are considered by their peers to be the most overrated.

A Sports Illustrated anonymous survey of PGA Tour players recently found that Rickie Fowler and Ian Poulter are considered to get too much hype given their perceived talent level. Both Fowler and Poulter received 24 percent of votes on the question of which player is most overrated on the PGA Tour.

The 26-year-old Fowler has just one PGA Tour win, a playoff victory over Rory McIlroy and D.A. Points in the 2012 Wells Fargo Championship. However, he became just the third player (Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus) in golf history to finish in the top five in all four majors in a season. Then again, he was also the first player to accomplish the feat without winning one of the majors.

Poulter hasn't won on the PGA Tour since 2012 either. He lost control of The Honda Classic in March, paving the way for a surprising Padraig Harrington win. He has eight top-10 major finishes, but some have been considered "back door" in that the 39-year-old Englishman made his charge on Sunday from well back of the lead.

Two-time Masters winner Bubba Watson came in third at 12 percent. Hunter Mahan was in fourth with 8 percent. Given the Golf Boys' representation in the survey, it's somewhat surprising Ben Crane, despite winning five times on the PGA Tour, didn't get fifth place.

Golf superstar Phil Mickelson is being accused of allegedly wiring nearly $3 million to an “illegal gambling operation which accepted and placed bets on sporting events,” according to a report by ESPN.

Mickelson, who was not charged in the scheme, allegedly sent $2.75 million to a former sports gambling handicapper who was connected to an offshore operation, sources told ESPN’s "Outside the Lines."

Gregory Silveira pleaded guilty to three counts of money laundering of funds from an unnamed “gambling client” between February 2010 and February 2013, according to court documents obtained by ESPN’s “Outside the Lines.” Although Mickelson’s name does not appear in the court documents, sources familiar with the case told ESPN that the unnamed client is Mickelson.

The plea agreement, which was signed May 1 by Silveira, included a reference to the “money laundering of funds from P.M.” ESPN inquired about the reference, which then prompted the U.S. Attorney’s Office to file a motion to have the original plea agreement stricken. On June 18th, an amended version was filed that took out any reference to “P.M.”

According to court documents obtained by ESPN, Silveira accepted a wire transfer of $2.75 million from a “gambling client” to his Wells Fargo Bank account in March 2010. A few days later, court documents show Silveira transferred $2.475 million and then $275,000 to another Wells Fargo account and then transferred the $2.475 million to an account he had at JPMorgan Chase Bank.

“At the time, defendant initiated these three transfers with the intent to promote the carrying of an illegal gambling operation,” according to a plea agreement.

The investigation was led by the Internal Revenue Service and court documents do not indicate what prompted the investigation.

Mickelson, a five-time major winner and one of the PGA tour’s wealthiest and most popular players, was investigated last year by the FBI and Securities and Exchange Commission for his possible role in an insider trading case. Mickelson was cleared of any charges after an investigation found no evidence of any wrongdoing.

The U.S. may have won the Solheim Cup late Sunday, but the story that would dominate the competition had already happened.

On the 17th hole on Sunday morning, while finishing a team match from the day before, U.S. player Alison Lee left her putt to win the hole about 18 inches away from the cup. That short tap-in was to tie the hole and keep the match all-square going into the 18th hole.

Usually in situations like that — when making an easy putt like that is a formality — opposition players will ‘give’ their opponents the putt so they don’t have to physically go through the motions of knocking it into the hole. That’s what Lee thought had happened, so she picked up her ball and walked to the next hole.

The problem? Lee’s opponent, Suzann Petterson, hadn’t awarded Lee the putt, which meant that in picking up her ball, Lee accidentally conceded the hole to the Europeans. Europe ended up winning the match 2 up, Lee broke down in tears and Pettersen caught some serious heat for holding Lee to the letter of the law.

http://i.imgur.com/CjF55u8.jpg

To be clear, Pettersen didn’t break any rules and it was Lee’s mistake to assume the putt had been given, but in holding Lee so stringently to the rules, Pettersen acted not against the law but in opposition to the “spirit of the game.” For that, Pettersen apologized profusely on her Instagram account:

I’ve never felt more gutted and truly sad about what went down Sunday on the 17th at the Solheim Cup.

I am so sorry for not thinking about the bigger picture in the heat of the battle and competition. I was trying my hardest for my team and put the single match and the point that could be earned ahead of sportsmanship and the game of golf itself! I feel like I let my team down and I am sorry.

To the U.S. team, you guys have a great leader in Juli , who I’ve always looked up to and respect so much. Knowing I need to make things “right,” I had a face to face chat with her before leaving Germany this morning to tell her in person how I really feel about all of this. I wanted her also to know that I am sorry.

I hope in time the U.S. team will forgive me and know that I have learned a valuable lesson about what is truly important in this great game of golf which has given me so much in my life.

To the fans of golf who watched the competition on TV, I am sorry for the way I carried myself. I can be so much better and being an ambassador for this great game means a lot to me.

The Solheim Cup has been a huge part of my career. I wish I could change Sunday for many reasons. Unfortunately I can’t.

This week I want to push forward toward another opportunity to earn the Solheim Cup back for Europe in the right way. And I want to work hard to earn back your belief in me as someone who plays hard, plays fair and plays the great game of golf the right way.

(CNN)Is that it for Tiger Woods?

The 14-time major champion has sunk to world No. 400 after a litany of injuries and poor form saw him tumble down the rankings.

And the 39-year-old was in a particularly bleak mood Tuesday as he revealed his physical condition is so bad after another back operation that he can't even bend down to pick up a ball.

Woods underwent his third microdiscectomy surgery last month -- a procedure to remove bone around a pinched nerve to allow space for it to heal -- and admitted he has no idea when he will be back on the course.

"I have no answer for that. Neither does my surgeon or my physio," Woods said in a press conference at Albany Golf Club in the Bahamas, where this week he will host the Hero World Challenge tournament that raises funds for his charity.

"I also had to reset the clock each and every day and 'OK, here we go, this is a new day and this is taken for what it is.'

"I listen to my surgeon, I listen to my physios, and we just take it day by day. Hopefully the day by day adds up to something positive here soon."

Woods won his last major title at the U.S. Open in 2008 but hasn't had a significant victory since lifting the Bridgestone Invitational in 2013.

He has previously suffered a serious knee ligament injury, but his back problem is proving particularly difficult psychologically.

"There is no timetable for this and that's been the hardest mindset adjustment is that I don't know," he lamented. "Where is the light at the end of the tunnel? I don't know, so that's been hard.

"There is nothing I can look forward to, nothing I can build towards."

Woods, who spent a record 683 weeks ranked as world No. 1, revealed that a lot of his time is now spent playing video games and soccer with his kids, although his movement is severely restricted.

"I walk. And I walk ... I'm just walking, and that's it," he said glumly.

"I would like to be able to get to that first (bending over to pick up ball). If I can get to that, then we can start talking about golf."

Woods is also facing up to the fact he may never win a major, or any title, again in his career.

"I think pretty much everything beyond this will be gravy," said Woods, who has racked up 79 PGA Tour triumphs in total and over $110 million in tournament prize money.

"I've passed Jack (Nicklaus) in the all-time win list, just shy of Sam (Snead). I passed Sam basically a decade ago in major championships but I'm still shy of Jack's (record of 18).

"So I've had a pretty good career for my 20s and 30s. For my 20 years out here I think I've achieved a lot, and if that's all it entails, then I've had a pretty good run.

"But I'm hoping that's not it. I'm hoping that I can get back out here and compete against these guys. I really do miss it."

And Woods isn't the only one. Four-time major winner Rory McIlroy sent a message of support to the stricken golfer on social media.

"Wishing my idol and friend a speedy recovery," the Northern Irishman posted on Instagram. "Golf without him doesn't bear thinking about. Hope to see you back on the course soon."

On Wednesday, Phil Mickelson apologized for hitting a still-moving putt at the 2018 U.S. Open in a text message to several reporters. Mickelson, who previously had defended his actions on the 13th green in Round 3 at Shinnecock Hills, noted that his frustration and anger boiled over and he more or less snapped.

"I know this should've come sooner, but it's taken me a few days to calm down," Mickelson wrote to reporters. "My anger and frustration got the best of me last weekend. I'm embarrassed and disappointed by my actions. It was clearly not my finest moment and I'm sorry."

It was certainly not his finest moment, but the contrition will likely turn the tide for many. Heck, a huge group of fans were rooting him on to begin with to stick it to the crooked USGA (or some variation of that).
1008062552780107776
Originally, Mickelson said that he'd thought before about putting a moving ball that was going off the green and just taking the two-stroke penalty. It became clear over time that this was not necessarily the case, and that Mickelson simply lost it in the moment (I think we've all been there as golfers).

"I don't mean disrespect to anybody," said Mickelson on Saturday after his round. "I know it's a two-shot penalty. At that time, I just didn't feel like going back and forth and hitting the same shot over. I took the two-shot penalty and moved on. It's my understanding of the rules. I've had multiple times where I've wanted to do that. I just finally did."

He was eventually cleared of disqualification as the USGA applied Rule 14-5, which states that you can hit a moving ball and receive a two-stroke penalty without disqualification, even if the rule may have been incorrectly applied.

Mickelson's wife, Amy, said he offered to withdraw from the tournament.

I've never been a Phil fan but the circus after this event has been absurd. I saw one article saying he killed the game of golf or something  He did what almost every amateur player has done with their friends after a few beers, chasing a rolling ball. Sure, he did it intentionally knowing there was an odd couple of rules at play, but get over it, he apologized and offered to withdraw.

THE captain of Carnoustie Golf Club has caused controversy by saying the town is too small to host The Open. The world’s best players tee off this morning on Bill Thompson’s home course in Angus.

But yesterday, he hit out at tournament organisers the R&A, claiming that his members will suffer while the stars compete for the championship.

He claimed that parts of the historic golf course had been torn up to allow hospitality tents to be pitched as more than 50,000 spectators head to this week’s event.

And he complained that the “corporate machine” had overgrown The Open, and members’ enjoyment of their club was suffering as a result.

Changes to ticket policies and tighter security around parking and road closures means local residents and visitors face more restrictions this year.

Mr Thompson told the BBC: “We have 14,000 residents – we are not built for 45-50,000 people. It is changing the balance. The balance was that

you would always put up with an element of disruption, and a number of weeks with not playing the course, and a number of weeks with less play.

“But for the first time we have actually seen pieces of the golf course torn up for corporate hospitality tents. We have already lost several weeks of play and we will lose more before they come back into play.

“It is difficult because the venues all want to have the Open because it is a badge that brings business. It allows them to set green fees to a certain level and the income to allow them to pay for the many, many green-keepers and the great courses we get to play on all year round.

“But at the end of the day, this is a machine, a corporate machine which is run very professionally but as a machine, there is very little input, very little communication.

“We are absolutely on the periphery of this tournament. When it goes away next week we will be hoping to try to re-baseline our business back to what we do, which is look after our members and welcome visitors.”

Mr Thompson’s comments are controversial, considering that the Championship brings an estimated £140million to the Scottish economy.

The 2016 event at Royal Troon boosted the local area by around £25million.

The chief executive of the R&A, Martin Slumbers, answered Mr Thompson’s criticisms last night.

He said: “I think everyone has a point but I’m not sure I agree with him. The Open has grown as golf has grown. The Open is one of the world’s great sporting events and the infrastructure definitely has grown around it.

“But we feel very strongly that this is a great golf course, and there is plenty of space here.”

He added: “I wish we talked more positively about here.

“We are very proud to showcase this golf course and this town on the world stage.

“At the heart of every Open, there has to be a classic links golf course, and that’s what we have, and we work around that.”
