A 14-year-old girl has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly lacing homemade brownies with a household chemical and feeding them to two boys.

Neither of the boys, who are brothers aged 12 and 13, were harmed during the incident, which is the subject of a closed children's court hearing in the Australian state of Queensland.

It is alleged the girl, who is not related to the boys but lived near them in Brisbane, deliberately added a poisonous household chemical to the brownies and fed them to the pair at their home.

A police spokesman told the AAP news service the poison was a substance generally found around the home.

It is understood the boys stopped eating the brownies and told their parents about the unusual taste.

The parents then contacted police.

The girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has been charged with attempted murder, administering poison with intent to harm, and acts intended to maim.
