The Okanagan Film Festival International is struggling to find a venue after Landmark Cinemas gave organizers the boot over a controversial documentary about Colombian men who have sex with donkeys.
The festival was set to open this week at Landmark's Paramount Theatre in Kelowna, B.C., but when word spread last week that it would be showing the bestiality documentary, angry citizens spoke out, organizing online petitions against the screening.
Soon after, the theatre opted to cancel the festival.
Upon hearing the news, a group of students from the University of British Columbia's Okanagan campus offered to find a space on campus for the film festival.
But the university issued a statement Wednesday night denying the school would host the event. UBC cited short notice, not controversy, as the reason behind the decision, noting space "has not been granted as it does not allow sufficient time to arrange the campus support services — including security, facilities, custodial and parking staff — required for an event of this type.
The 75-minute documentary, Donkey Love, has been screened in Australia and won Best Documentary at the Melbourne Underground Film Festival.
"Imagine this: You have the opportunity to go to a part of the world and discover a culture no one else, from outside of the country itself, has ever been or seen. You arrive only to discover a shocking truth: people here not only have sex with donkeys, they consider it a tradition and celebrate it as part of their culture," reads a description of the film on the festival's Facebook page. "What would you do? Daryl and
Tyler made a documentary."
The Facebook page also takes aim at Landmark Cinemas.
"Let's all agree on something, when you're charged $12 for some popcorn and a drink after already paying $10 to get in the door, can you really say you don't feel like they just did to you what Colombian men do to donkeys?"
