View Full Version : Sandy

With any luck it will completely wipe Washington DC off of the map and flush it down the Patomac River.

My Home Owners Insurance is paid up so phuckit..

5 Reasons this is gonna suck.

1. A NORTHBOUND HURRICANE

Hurricane Sandy is moving very slowly toward the north-northeast and is expected to continue its current path parallel to the Carolinas over the weekend, forecasters say. At some point, it's expected to become what's known as an extratropical storm. Unlike a tropical system like a hurricane, which gets its power from warm ocean waters, extratropical systems are driven by temperature contrasts in the atmosphere. At some point, probably Monday, Sandy will begin to turn back toward the coast and eventually make landfall over Delaware or New Jersey.

Although Sandy is currently a hurricane, it's important not to focus too much on its official category or its precise path. It's a massive system that will affect a huge swath of the East Coast, regardless of exactly where it hits or its precise wind speed.

2. EARLY WINTER STORMSandy is expected to merge with a wintry system from the west, at which point it will become the powerful superstorm that has forecasters and officials all along the Eastern Seaboard on edge. One of the other systems is an early winter storm from the west _ the product of a low pressure system. Winds from that system will pull Sandy back toward the U.S. mainland.

3. ARCTIC AIR FROM THE NORTH

Frigid air coming south from Canada also is expected to collide with Sandy and the wintry storm from the west, creating a megastorm that is expected to park over the northeast for days. Forecasters are expecting residents from Florida to North Carolina to feel the peripheral effects. But the brunt of the storm will hit states farther north once Sandy collides with the winter storm and frigid air. Officials are bracing for the worst: nearly a foot of rain, high winds and up to 2 feet of snow.

4. HIGH TIDES COULD WORSEN FLOODING

Further complicating matters is the possibility for dangerous storm surges: A full moon means the tides will be higher than usual, which will make it easier for the storm's powerful winds to push water into low-lying areas. That, coupled with the threat of several inches of rain, has officials working to shore up flood defenses.

5. COMBO OF SNOW, WIND INCREASES RISK FOR WIDESPREAD POWER OUTAGES

Storms in recent years have left hundreds of thousands of people along the East Coast without power, sometimes for days at a time. Utilities have been bringing in extra crews and lining up tree trimmers so they're prepared, and with good reason. The superstorm brings two possibilities for knocking out electricity. For one, hurricane-force winds of at 74 mph could send tree branches into power lines, or even topple entire trees and power poles. Those left standing could succumb to snow, which could weigh down still-leafy branches enough to also topple trees.

It may only be a cat one, but the bitch is freakin' huge. Its eye is currently way out in the Atlantic, but its reach is just off the coast. There's some elevated winds down here, but nothing major, and I haven't seen it rain yet.

I hope it doesn't mess up anybody's Halloween too bad up North.

just dont say this storm is without precedent...this is a very common occurrence, I'm not expecting it to be a super huge deal, especially after last october's snow that would have taken anything ready to drop down.

its a little windy right now, tiny bit rainy, nothing more. :D

That's good at least. Our biggest issue is it's been raining here for days on end already from an unrelated storm, the ground is saturated and can't hold any more water. If we get the 3+ inches they are predicting there will be flooding issues. I'm just hoping the power stays on, I don't have any backup heating source.

FB, you have no clue what your saying. Irene was NOTHING. Irene was on land for most of its track which made it loose strength, as Sandy was on water until it hit Jersey. Damage is 10x greater than Irene. Most of the Jersey shore is GONE, there is no more Seaside, no more boardwalk on Atlantic City, Wildwood is in shambles, thousands of houses were lost, billions in damage, a large portion of Staten Island is GONE, FEMA isnt doing shit, nor is Red Cross, the list goes on. Just because Irene hit you harder in VT, and Sandy did close to no damage to you this time, doesnt mean that its a minor storm. The world doesnt revolve around VT. Look at the damage pictures. Go ahead, tell me im wrong and just being an ass, ill just call you ignorant.

Got my power back earlier today as ConEd shut it off to repair damage to subway tunnels a few days ago. Subways are running limited service, none past 34th St in Manhattan. Buses are running full schedule. All bridge service is running. Death count is 95 and rising as they are still finding bodies in flood water. Staten Island is the most hard hit borough in NYC. Lower Manhattan is still pretty bad though. My area of the Bronx did not get hit as bad though. Just some downed trees and street lights. There are still thousands without power in the city, and millions in the tri-state (NY, CT, NJ). The freedom towers went unscaved, but a condo building near them with a crane on top toppled over.

DemonGeminiX
11-02-2012, 05:48 PM
The death toll has more than doubled that of Irene's as well.

FBD
11-02-2012, 05:53 PM
:hand: Irene had more intensity, a steeper eyewall - had it been helped out on both sides by the jetstream like sandy, it would have been thrice the storm, easily. Not to mention Sandy relatively coincided with full moon, making the storm surge that much greater. Go ahead and try to call me ignorant, but context is context and the amount of damage as a cumulative result doesnt change "a storm's intensity." Almost all of the damage was done by the water surge, the winds were simply not *that* intense. Again that's saying nothing about the flooding, which caused almost all of the damage. I had all of 3 branches down from a dead tree in my yard - compare that to an intense hurricane like andrew or something that was ripping full grown trees out by the roots around here...go ahead and argue some other context if you want, that's not going to go back in time and make sandy more powerful than it was.

4th most intense storm of 2012. :wavey: There's more factors that contribute to damage than just "storm intensity."

..not to mention, most of those posts were while it was going on and finishing, before we got a lot of news on the flooding and shit. It was next to nothing in central CT in the grand scheme.

I was going to say....in the past I've been amazed by some members here. Belittling or talking down about a disaster like nothing happened. It's one thing to be brave but for ffs, other people are suffering and suffering hard. Feel fortunate I guess that your house is still standing with electricity etc.

*the proceeding post was not directed at anyone in particular and not meant to fan the flames, thank you :) *

I always found that weird about the Cali coast. You guys are right next to a fucking ocean. You would figure moisture from it would accumulate in the atmosphere and dump on you a little more often than it does. Now granted it does up in Oregon and Washington state, but still...

I made a map.....well MTA did, I just used paint, lol

Ok, so here is what it means, ill go from top to bottom explaining:

1. The black circle, thats where I am.
2. (Throughout the map you will see red lines) The red lines mean flooding. So, the only part of the uppers that got flooded are Morningside and Upper West Side. In the Bronx, Tremont (my hood) Kingsbridge. It was not that bad that they had to shut down everything, and no flood waters were in my part of Tremont.....thank God.
3. The black circle in Queens, La Guardia Airport, COMPLETELY FLOODED. If I could find a picture, I would post it, but there are none of LGA. Flights I believe have started going out from LGA, but im not all sure, the media just cares about the damage.
4. Red line in Queens, that is the neighborhood of Astoria. Flooding was not that bad there, it was mostly rain and poor planning when they built up Astoria in the first place.
5. Black line going across Manhattan, that is where ALL train service stops, due to major flooding.
6. Red Lines in MidTown and Lower Manhattan. MAJOR MAJOR FLOODING. Hoods that were flooded include:
- Times Square
- Rock Center
- SoHo
- NoHo
- Chelsea
- Tribeca
- China Town
- White Hall
- Wall Street
- West/East Village
- Greenwich Village
- Bowery
- Little Italy
- Hells Kitchen
All of these areas combined, house over 500,000 people.

7. JFK Airport barely made it, but there are flights leaving from it.
8. Red lines in Brooklyn, the one to the far right is Rockaway Peninsula which got SEVERELY FLOODED, for obvious reasons, I mean look at it, it's just asking to be flooded. BUT, the richest of the rich live there, so im sure they can manage, fucking greedy snobs. And the red lines on the bottom of Brooklyn are Bay Ridge, Sheepshead Bay, Dyker Heights, and Coney Island. They got flooded pretty badly as well. Coney Island is still in good shape and the Cyclone is still standing. Houses were lost there.
9. Now, we get to Staten Island, the most damaged borough of NYC. I made the lines purple because purple usually means SEVERE damage. Some hoods there were completely wiped out, people are homeless, and SI has the highest body count. It is honestly too depressing for me to talk about SI and its condition right now since I know someone who has lost everything who lives there. Just know that it is VERY damaged.

So yeah, I hope this map is informational to you all who are curious about the damage and what is going on over here. But, we are all New Yorkers and we are all very resilient and will get through this. We have all been through a lot in this fucking concrete jungle litter shit cluster fuck smut wasteland we call home everyday. NYC will rob you and cheat you, it will take your friends and turn them on you, it will kick your ass and break your heart. But then it will pick you up again and make you feel so totally alive and untouchable. It is the center of the world, it is the best place in the world, and once it is in your heart, it will never leave you, EVER. NYC is a great place, but it gets tiring and obnoxious if you have been living here for 24 years like I have. Well, yeah.
